engine noise

I recently completed a 1500 mi. trip in my 77 Argosy MH. On the return trip I noted that the engine seemed to be running quite a bit louder. It's a 454 with 57,000, recently tuned and running well. The RPM's were the same, the temp OK, the mileage the same but definitely louder. Could this be an exhaust manifold gasket, firewall insulation or ???

could be a lot of things. check the obvious things first like missing insulation, belts, accessories, etc. An engaged fan clutch is pretty darn loud. If you can't find anything obvious start checking the engine, compressions check, pull & inspect the plugs, etc.

What does it sound like? Just engine noise but louder, ticking, thumping, etc?

It sound like the engine is racing faster, but again, the RPM's are fine. I don't notice it until I get above about 35 mph. Thought the transmission might be slipping but no loss of power and the fluid level was OK.

If it is intermittent it is probably the clutch fan kicking in, they make a lot of noise when operating. Your temp gauge should drop when it happens.

No, it's constant and the temp doesn't change. When idling or at low speed it sounds fine.

Maybe the clutch is bad. When you start the engine the fan should run a minute or so then disengage, shouldn't kick in again until the engine has enough heat to need cooling. Does it stay running all the time?

yes, it does seem to be running all the time. I'll have it checked. Thanks for your insight!

the clutch fan gives a sort of roaring sound that will surproise you if you have not noticed it before.

If the clutch stays engaged then you will also notice a drop in mpg. Check the little coil thingee on the front center of the fan clutch and see if some of the viscous liquid is leaking. Usually you will see the coil spring start to get an oil film which gets dirty over time. After warmup and the engine is turned off, the fan should turn freely. If not, your clutch fan is engaged all the time and will have to be replaced, an easy job if you can get to it.

Again, thank you all for your thoughts and insight. I'll bet that is the problem. Been feeling poorly for a few days but soon I'll get it checked out and corrected.
