Sorry to hear of your loss!
What happened?
As for value.... it maybe a little late to determine that now but I do hope you had lots of photographs to document work done to it. A lot will determine value, gas or rarer turbo diesel? Rear bath or possible (extremely rare) center bath? Condition of interior/exterior.
Gas 454 with good but not updated interior and semi polished exterior, maybe bottom end 15G's, top end 25G's
Cheers
Tony

Not sure as I was driving it when it caught on fire. I'm thinking electrical or mechanical failure. My mom was in the car behind me and called me to let me know the RV was smoking really bad. It was on fire underneath by the time I pulled over.

So sorry that happened to you. Thank goodness Mom was behind you and you had time to get out. Hope you get top top dollar and your search for another that is in sweet condition will be fruitful.

That is a heartbreaker, glad you are okay.
Isuzusweet pretty much hit the market values on the head with his reply. From seeing the "before" photos in your other thread, my guess is that you won't be able to find something comparable for under $20k. There are some 280's for sale for quite a bit more right now, see the "classic motorhomes for sale" thread.

Here's a "comp" with a $26.5k asking price that the insurance company will probably see, from Atlanta craigslist:

"This was the last year that the Airstream Motorhome was built. They stopped production after 1979 on the Motorhome and only made pull behind campers. "
Interesting!?
Bad luck man! The value of these things is all over the place and hard to establish. Hope you make out well. The experience you gained on the first one will be helpful on your next project. I was able to accomplish about a years worth of projects on the 94 in a month due to the experience gained on the 95.

Another reason to consider an on-board automatic fire suppression system on your next one. Good luck

Or buy a diesel.....allthough it won't help with an electrical fire from a short, but at least you're just battling an electrical fire and not having gas adding fuel to the flames, so to speak.
Cheers
Tony
OP... I know this maybe crass and vulture like considering the situation, but AST, you may want to purchase her back from your insurance company as there are some very hard to replace parts on her for your new one or to sell; like the door lock and latch for example which can't be found anywhere.
Please keep us updated on where she ends up.

I intend to buy her back. I know it will cost me more to rebuild her than what it'll be worth when I'm done so I've got a big decision to make. I'm just sick that I didn't have it appraised. I've never had an experience like this and the insurance treats you like you meant this to happen. I'm saying to myself are you crazy! Who would do such a stupid thing to an airstream? Especially one that is treated like a baby! This was a member of my family and it upsets me that they ask you if you have a job, where do you work and crap like that. Then it's like 20 questions after that. The big one is what have you done to it? I'm like where do I start and of course I can't think of more than a few things. And we all know we do something/ improvements all the time. Hell, I just read my past posts on here today and I forgot several things. And something's I posted here didn't get done because I forgot to do them or put them off til later. Receipts? How do I charge for my time when I did 90% of the work? I have part receipts not labor receipts! What I really want is a do over of that day, not a check of any amount. I'm just sick!

One thing Ive done from the very beginning is log each and every thing I do to the 310. Now I dont include daily maintenance items but everything that has a cost associated. Also tried to keep every receipt. Not so much for resale, but so I can look back as to when something was done and how much it cost. It hopefully will be useful for insurance purposes should something happen.
I met with my Progressive insurance agent just 3 days ago to ask if they have a list of appraisers that they honor, I dont want to have it appraised and then have them tell me they dont recognize that particular appraiser. He said just use one that is reputable....... Now I need to find one.
I think you are wise to buy it back. You can use it to rebuild or as a donor. Hang in there, youve got a lot of folks pulling for you.

Really sorry to hear about your 280!
I have dealt with Airstream Insurance claims several times and had to provide proof of improvements and comps to get them to pay. Since I have restored several Motorhomes, I would value your 280 at about 22 -27k.
I know this does not help you with this claim, but do yourself a big favor and establish a "stated" value on your next Airstream policy. I would have lost big time without it on one of my claims.
If you need some Airstream Motorhome time, please come and visit me and my current 310 in North Austin. It may help you start dreaming again.

Did you by chance have replacement cost insurance on it ? If you did the insurance company may have to rebuild it for you. Just a thought.

But I know I had just spoken with them because it said $8500. That's what I paid for it 8 yrs ago before restoration so I called them and told them it needed to be higher. And I looked at my policy and it says ACV!

The thing about stated value is that you have to come to some agreement with the ins company as to what that value is. They start with KBB which we all know isnt accurate. I have a stated value policy but it is much lower than actual. I dont know of any other way to increase the stated value other than to get a proffesional appraisal. Is there some other way? Im willing to pay higher premiums, thats not the issue. This heart breaking situation is really a heads up for all of us AS motorhome owners. Many of us are in the same situation with our rigs. I just dont know enough about insurance to arrange a policy that will come close to actual replacement value. In my case, with a 310 turbo diesel with an Allison tranny, there just isnt enough of them to get many true comps. Trying to explain that to an agent is near impossible. Any insurance gurus out there that could help us ALL out so we can learn from this tragic situation......?

I am no insurance expert, but I can tell you that since my first experience with Hail, I have insured my MH's and Trailers with a stated value rider. It may just be a matter of which company you insure your Airstream with. I am with State Farm and when I asked the "new" agent that I wanted a "stated" or "agreed on" value, she told me that it is not available. I was consistent with my request and always get the stated value rider. It costs a little more, but so what.
Talk to your agent and change insurance companies, if they can't help you.
It is important to understand that even with a stated value rider, the actual claim will still be determined at the time of the loss, but you are already in a much better position to start with AND you may not end up with a salvage title due to 75% bracket when vehicles are usually deemed a total loss.
