345 oil capacity

Just changed oil, plugs, and added a k/n filter.... i thought 6 quarts would do the trick... but still read very low on the dipstick so i added about another 1/2 to 3/4 a quart and got a reading in the safe zone.... Just wondering if anyone else adds this much??? I wouldnt suppose the dipstick is not going all the way in... never really had that problem with anything else. Moho is a 89 345le w/a 454. oil pressure reads about 3/4 on the guage... where does most everyone elses read??

how 'stock' is the 454 ?

what size (length) oil filter are u using?

as i recall, mine was typically twice as long as the stock 454 filter and took about 1.5 pints of extra oil...

later i added an additional oil cooler, again the cooler and hoses increased the oil capacity.

i'm pretty sure the fluid capacities was/is in the a/s owners manual, but became irrelevant after modifications.

no recollection of the oil pressure readings....

The dip-stick on our '86 345 has higher markes added to the stock unit. An oil change with filter takes 7 quarts.

our 90 345le w/454 has the amsoil kit. I've always presumed the oil pan has a deeper than stock sump because when changing oil, filter and by-pass filter it takes 11 quarts. The first time I serviced it after adding the 8th. quart I kept looking underneath to see if oil was pouring out but that was about 12,000 miles and two oil changes ago and all is well. I do have sending unit on my must-change list as guage pegs soon after start up.

swinginping- i recently changed the sending unit on the 345/454 now guage shows steady 63 or so psi which would also be about 3/4 on stock guage.

my 77 argosy MH with 454 took 11 quarts with filter change, but it also has an oil cooler (hoses run up to a mini radiator in the front)

Matt- Our 454/MH also has the added oil cooler which I forgot to mention in above post. Being in southwest USA I'm glad to have anything that will help cooling/lubrication. Like yours, 11 quarts is capacity on mine also.
