Thank you's

I'm always affraid to do these because I'm worried I'm forgetting someone.

Some of the most recent thank you's.

Brad - Brad has recreated both the Around the World Caravan Badge art (which we're hoping Vintage Trailer Supply will follow through with a small production run) and the large decals that were on the caravan trucks. Brad has no doubt spent many hours cleaning up this art work, and making workable files for this art. We're hoping to get the enamel plate reproduced for the entry area, and hoping to get the logo that was on the caravan trucks made into a rug for the entry area.

Rick and JJ - sent us a bathroom vanity faucet which will soon be going into place as soon as I finish the cabinets.

Wally (flyrc) came across some vintage 40 lb propane tanks from a salvage vintage non-airstream trailer that he's made available. Will need to get the valves switched over, but a great find from a great friend! I know I'm going to be spending some time soon over there helping him get the rest of his floor in his 56 flying cloud once the weather improves.

Thanks to everyone who contributes knowledge and wisdom as well. Frank and others that chime in with good advice on products, methods, words of encouragement etc.

Today was a good day, well a good afternoon. We had early release today due to parent conferences earlier this week. I managed to build the wall between the goucho and tub, which is oak on one side, and a white shower wall coating. Got that installed, so now I can get the tub trimmed out. More importantly with that wall in, I was finally able to get the battery installed under the goucho. I also tucked in next to the breaker box a intellipower w/charge wizard, not stock I know but this thing didn't have an inverter of any kind, just dual power fixtures. I want to be able to use the 12v without fear of draining the battery. Easy enough to remove down the road, and totally out of sight. So finally have 12 volt and 110 up and running full time in the trailer, and also got the kitchen sink light installed and hooked up. Goucho light and shelf is next, but it was too wet out to do any painting.

Foam is sitting out in our guest room recovering from its vacuum packing for shipping. We're excited that it's starting to feel like there is an end to this restoration.

We have committed to being at the Baker City Rally in July with it.

Scott & Megan, Looking good. One of our Oregon member parents went on the ATW caravan so I've asked him to bring anything he has on the Caravan. Tom may be able to tell you about some of the pictures you have. I'm planning to do a slide show of your pictures in the Museum theater.

Cool glad people will get to view the photos. Sorry if anyone is tired of updates every few days, but trying to document the progress as much for ourselves as for others.

Spent the majority of today building the refrigerator cabinet. Still have to build the top, and the bottom door. Will be working with the local sign shop to help me recreate the door insert (white with the center section stripes as seen in the attached photo off vintageairstream.com)

Also got the foam cut for the dinette, our son was so excited to get some time to sit out there at the table.

Also picked up the tanks from Wally (THANKS WALLY!!!). They are aluminum but have been painted, so will have to strip and polish them, and get new valves on it, but despite Wally's prediction it won't be done in the next few days.

Going to upgrade to a new style regulator, the sight glass is broken on this one, not to mention I am confident it no longer works since its probably full of crud from having the glass broken and the lines off it for years.

Scott-- I'd love to have this as well, for my 63 Overlander. Is there any chance you'd be able to send me a high-res version of the graphic once you have it? I've been trying to put one together for a couple of years now, but haven't managed to do so.

Your progress is fantastic, I enjoy the frequent updates so keep 'em coming!

Edit: Oh wait, I thought you were going for the International door fridge insert. Did you decide againist that?

Thanks Utee, nah ours was not the international version, so we're going the stock version. I know I've seen a few for sale, but big time expensive, not to mention they won't fit in most modern fridges. I'll see how good a picture I have of that. I know I saved pictures from a few ads.

I'd love to get contact information (wonder who the parents were?) and copies of anything they are willing to share. I am trying to reconstruct as much about the ATW caravan as possible to preserve it for future generations of Airstream owners. All of this should help a 50th Anniversary celebration for 2013.

Darn it!

So there goes that assumption rule.

I started redoing the kitchen cabinet. I had all the pieces, it fit together well, so I started carefully gluing and screwing the entire thing together making sure everything fit just so. Once it was all rebuilt, splintered and rotten wood replaced I reskinned and veneered, stained. I had several times mocked up the original counter top and everything fit just fine, all the original screw holes etc lined up perfectly.

Went to install it in the trailer today, but then I figured out I have an issue with the stove.

The stove, which came out of a 62 I always assumed since it looked exactly the same that it was too the correct stove.

Since the kitchen cabinet butts up against the fridge cabinet and against the dinette it isn't possible to make it shorter without a complete redesign of the cabinet structure.

The rough opening is 19.5x19.5x19.5" all with the original staples etc. The original stove was long gone when I got it, and I've had this replacement sitting here for several years.

I have been searching and haven't found a replacement that will fit either. The furnace goes below the stove and the cabinet must close over the top. The new style units have a continuous grate over the top that is much taller than the old style, and the overhangs on the newer units are much wider, no doubt to allow greater margins of error on countertop building.

Does anyone have a stove of this design kicking around with those dimensions that they'd sell and I could pay to have freighted here?

Scott you have a missing peice. There is an aluminum surround that covers the space between the stove and the counter top. That is where the missing couple of inches are. I will try and get you some photos of mine.

Thanks Frank, my first post was clear as mud. I have those metal pieces, all cleaned up ready to install, its that the stove in my first post is 1.5" wider than the opening, and 2" taller than the opening, even including the area needed for the folding counter. I need a smaller range to fit in that space. After more clearly looking at vintage photos the stove I need has flat controls, and is noticeably skinnier than the one I had picked up.

All the modern units measure a minimum of 20 5/8 all the way up to 22" wide, which I just can't make fit. Know anyone that has a stray range that's the right size by chance?

man, I sent a 63 stove to the scrape yard just a few months ago. I have a 54 here with a pile called a stove in it. It is a later model stove so there is always a chance. I will check tomorrow. I also have a gorgous white 1960 Princess on the shelf. It is in near perfect condition. 3000 miles is a long way to travel, but Lewis and Clarke did it both ways any excuse to get more donations into that trailer of yours is my personal mission.

more info

I emailed nkeeler, who has a 63, and was looking at his thread. If his stove is in deed the right measurements, it was a Tappan range.

On a side note, I do need to find a home for this magic chef stove. I'd hate to see it parted out, very little pitting up top, the oven is absolutely spotless. Anyone want it?

See post 871 above for pictures

Anyone know of any airstream specific used parts houses that might have one of these kicking around? I've run the course asking anyone I can think of that has come in contact with a 62 or 63. Several went to the scrap heap months ago, but hoping someone might still have something.

I have contacted the one in the classifieds serveral times but heard nothing back. Any leads are appreciated!

Are there any forums members near Oklahoma City that could help me get a range listed here on the forums classifieds and locally there on craigslist? So far its the only one I've been able to locate and having a tough time locking in a sale (at asking price) I think mostly due to the distance issue.

Says items are located in Newcastle
