Scott, perhaps you are unaware that the numbers haven't been painted on for a long time. I think they were painted on back in the 1950's, but by the time of the Around the World Caravan, they were vinyl "stick ons". I wonder if the font is the same as is currently used within WBCCI (it looks very close if not identical)? If so, we might be able to get you some new "stick on" numbers to replace the outlines of the originals, but there might be a charge (of course that would be easier if you were to join the club, then they'd send them to you free.).

Thanks Joe, that would explain why it is so dry and rubs off, the vinyl has just degraded that far. We've considered joining, at least for a year and see. We'd probably join the Oregon unit, since we're not that far from there and they seem to do a few more things we'd be interested in. I've got a guy here locally that can cut either stencils or too can cut vinyl, the vinyl certainly would be easier than painting. I'll have to look and see if I can pick out clear photos of newer numbers and see if they are the same or not.

Here's a better shot of the current #'s

Hey, I took the time to look thru the photos we have of the members who took the caravan with us last year (all taken in August 2008), with each member in front of their trailer, showing the numbers. From several that show 8's, 6's, 7's, & 1's, I'd say the current font is identical to what is in that photo from your trailer.

If you do chose to join, you can ask to be assigned number 8671, but if it hasn't been three years since Cecil last renewed, the club may have to get his permission to reassign those numbers to you, as they typically reserve then for a couple of years in case someone rejoins.

If a clear head on photo is taken of the numbers, I can make an Adobe Illustrator file to size using the old numbers as a template and your vinyl lettering guy can make them from my file. Really rather that you join the WBCCI though. If you don't, someone will eventually be issued this member number and then there would be two trailers running around the country confusing us all.

ahhhh the smell of nuvite

Ahh the smell of Nuvite and the hum of the cyclo.

I had one clean set of bonnets left so I thought I'd start getting the rear polished, and rivets back in the holes (sealed of course) and when I got home, blue skies, 49 degrees and so I went. An hour later there is the start of a shine but ran out of bonnet, so I have a few in simple green soaking tonight, then have to take them down and wash them.

I contacted WBCCI over the holidays about the number and heard back it was available, but was told I'd need to write to request it. I haven't followed up sense. Here's a straight on photo of the numbers, as well as a photo of the little bit of polishing I got done (and sealing up top).

Last photo shows some numbers that appear to be old CB numbers, top one is a 5, the rest are pretty readable. Would this have been present on the caravan or a later addition. Appear to be those black and gold self stick letters.

I'm not planning on polishing the entire trailer yet (all though I'm tempted), but am working on the rear end cap to make sure its all cleaned up, removing all the excess sealer, resealing the segments, replacing the patch on the street side, and polishing around the rub rail before reinstalling it.

Thank you's

I just wanted to take a second to thank Marc (3Ms75Argosy) and Mike (MikMiler) for helping me come up with a set of original side marker lights. Both guys sent me lights (among other things). The bases will be getting media blasted then painted and reinstalled.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Scott - have you tried the fabric fold method? I believe you can get a microfiber cloth or cotton sweatshirt material (from perfect polish or just get some from Jo-annes' fabrics or such) and rotate the sites where the heads come in contact. I think I still have a sheet from Perfect Polish that I can copy and send to you if you'd like. P.M. you email and I'll scan it this week to you if you'd like.

Hey, I recognize those lights!
Great work!

Scott, glad to help out. I wish I had your drive although I did manage to remove my axle and get a new one on the way. It may sound backwards to do that first but I want to make it to a rally before I disassemble the coach for a floor replacement.
Good luck, Mike

No idea on the CB numbers or would have HAM radio numbers? I have heard Pee Wee say that they did not use CB's or other radios on the '59-'60 African Caravan, but I have no idea if they were used on the Around the World Caravan. You'd think "yes". Maybe we can contact a surviving member from the caravan to find out that answer.

Having gone thru several owners since 1980, it is quite possible that the numbers were added later, too. I'd certainly record them before polishing them off, just in case.

Interesting Find

Well, cleaning up skin so I can seal things, and after removing stickers, and did the first pass with the polisher, check out the ghost of a decal... (look for the rectangle) Also, not sure of the vintage on the trailer sales decal, but it looked to be below the caravan sticker, but hard to tell for sure.

Bottom of the square sticker definately says "Caravan" I'm guessing the top said Wally Byam since I can se a Wa on the left and a "m" on the right, rest are impossible to read.

Thumbs up

What great Info..It's really too bad they were all "piled" on top of one another. With good photo's they could be re-produced and re-installed.

The progress your making is amazing!!!

Ok I'm a geek

Well its 42 degrees and I'm polishing. I have a day off, getting ready to do some more bolts but wanted to fix a couple leaks up front. Front window at the top leaks, so do the holes from the front missing nameplate, and several seams that need sealing, so why not just at least do the first cut of polish so you're working with a clean surface right? (Plus our very patient neighbor that's home office window is 8 feet from the trailer appreciates our 69's polish job a lot better than the current state of 8671.)

I did find that the black trailer shop decal was added after the caravan sticker was removed, more than likely trailer was traded in sometime in the last 20 years. The WBCCI round black stickers came off in individual layers and there were 3 identical. I think I remember seeing the rectangular "Wally Byam's Caravan" stickers on a photo somewhere on the forums. If I can get a clear enough one I'll get a buddy to cut it out of vinyl so it can be reinstalled down the road.

Polished for 4 hours this morning, but need to warm up now and have some lunch.

Here's my stopping point today. (The photos make the polish job look way better than it does in person, have many more passes to go before it's ready to seal etc)

Looks great Scott! I just came back from working on mine... it's down into the 30's in the shade where mine is... brrrrrr!!!!

About that WB Caravan sticker. Don't quote me, but I think either Rob Baker or Frank were working on making duplicates of this sticker.

Here's a link to a thread all about the sticker.... or plaque... depending on how much reading in the thread you do (I stopped at page 2). Page 2 has a download of a pic for you.

Great, thanks Marc! The back international stickers were added after the caravan one, so we'll probably go back to that one, since according to that thread it would have been there, if not for the AWC definately for the other caravans the couple had gone on.

Not me, but Mr Baker has something up his sleeve. I do not think it is a sticker however. I think in the early days an engraved aluminum plaque was used. Not too long ago someone may have out bid everyone on Ebay for one of those aluminum versions. Now if someone was to reproduce that... Gold mine I tell ya. Little old me is just playing with reproduction water decals. Like these...

I third that statement... oh wait. Yeah we plan to join, just right isn't a great use of $$$. Probably in the spring though. Also researching which state to join, we're actually closer to Oregon's activities than the majority of Washington's. We plan on doing so to give it a shot and see if we like it.

If I were you, I'd let WBCCI know your intentions, just to prevent them form accidentally giving the number 8671 to someone else in the meantime.

We're considering the Oregon Unit, we're not far from Oregon and they seem to be more geared towards a balanced age group from what I can read. Any Oregon members out there that might be able to give me feedback either through the thread or privately?
