It is time to replace the foam/upholstery on both gauchos. The front appears to be the original size/configuration. I am not sure if the side gaucho has the original configuration. Currently the side has one bottom cushion of 28 inches, the back is one piece 20 inches wide. From photos of other trailers it looks like the back was originally two pieces? Were they sewn together? I will try to attach pics...

I would appreciate any opinions/ideas/thoughts......thanks

Bump-bringing this back to the top of the posts. Maybe someone will be able to reply to this before it slips off the quick view of today's posts. Several people here have redone foam/upholstery of their gauchos so perhaps you'll find some help today. Also, you might use the search feature found on the menu bar at the top of this page. I'm not close enough to measure, but this will get you going. My seat portion goes from the front edge to the back (side) wall. At that back edge there is a sewn seam attaching a 12 inch high foam cushion to the main bottom cushion...forming a hinge affair allowing that back 12 inch cushion to rotate to a flat position when the gaucho in pulled out. The back area has a light plywood panel built inside the upholstery and gives a base support when folded out. Another 12 inch cushion is sewn/hinged at the top of that first 12 incher. It is sewn at the edge away from the Back (side) so that when the gaucho is slid out, when this first 12 inch cushion falls back (outward) onto the reinforced back, this 12 inch cushion can now be flipped over at its sewn hinge point to complete a flat matress affair. Here is a picture of a closed up one.

Based on the pic's, it appears the front one is correct and the side is wrong. The side (like the front) should be a total of three peices. Two are sewn together, the third sits in behind them. In fact, the only peice that is different between the front and the back is the foam peice that sits behind them. The one in in the front, will have rounded ends on the peice that sits in the back. The side couch will have squared off corners. You should be able to take the cushions (the peice that you sit on) (two peices sewn together) and put them either on the front or the side couch.

Thanks for the great info guys! I did a search and found a lot of info on foam and fabric, but not much on sizes/mechanics. I think the front gaucho is original and correct, and has a wooden shelf behind that helps support the seat-back. My current side gaucho does not have such a shelf, don't know if the 1965's ever did. Regardless of a shelf I think the method that MelodyRanch describes would work.

So here are the final results. I had a local auto uphostery guy do the work, using 5 inch foam and material I bought at the local fabric store.

The dimensions on the front gaucho: seat 19 inches deep, seat back 12 inches, curved cushion behind is 12 inches. Length is 72 inches for all. The seat back has a piece of plywood in the back to rest on the wooden shelf and provide support. The seam between the seat and back is sewn together.

The side gaucho is 76 inches longs. The seat is 24 inches, the two seat back pieces are 12 inches each. All seams sewn together. The photos shows it better than words.

With the seams sewn together it makes a nice bed because I no longer sink between the cushions.

The only downside is: on the side gaucho the seating depth is only 17 inches which is a little shallow for me personally. If I used 4 inch foam it would have left more room for seating.
