I think you got it! 1958 Custom.
Have you measured it to see how long it is tongue to bumper?

Just got back from measuring it...its 22'...looks like it has 2, YES 2 freshwater tanks! as well as 2 axles...COULD it be a World Traveler? Looking at Vintageairstream.com it states there that the only 2 axle of 22' is the WT....Thoughts?

Did you measure from where the stock bumper NORMALLY is or from where the extended bumper is? (OR FROM THE "SPARE BUMPER")If it isn't a World Traveler then it is a custom 1-off factory copy ... would be cool if someone could trace the WBCCI #s.
(how much?)

Yes, we measured from where the stock bumper is normally located; there to the tongue is 22'. The other bumper probably sticks out 2' or a little better. Still stumped... waiting to hear back this week about the offer and hoping someone can chime in with some help on the Wally number!!

For World Traveler: 22'; door next to endcap; twin axil; twin water supply; 1 twin bunk; rear bath w/curb/commode; center astrodome; 7 panel; 3 water sources for kitchen sink; .............
Against World Traveler: Hinges on door backwards; no "dresser' between bed and commode; streetside windows not the same; ....
Anybody else?

Another question for those who know about the 7 WTs; were they ALL made in OH? Notice the CA style wheel wells (not to mention that plate that says CA)... didn't know if this may also explain the hinges on the "wrong" side of the door?

Based on the pics at vintageairstream.com, all other 1958 22' models had door hinges on the left, like this one. It's a possibility it's a 22' Falcon since no pics are posted of that model, but then we're back to the tandem axle, which is stated to only have existed in World Travelers for 22' models.
The next model up that year with optional tandems was a 26' Overlander... even the Tradewind in '59 didn't have that as an option...

It is my understanding that any single axle trailer could be custom ordered with a second axle. If this was the case, a Custom nameplate was usually added but CA didn't start with name plates until later years. The big stumper for me is the serial number.
Where's Fred on this one?

I have a strong suspicion that is a very well traveled trailer you have there. It was surely built to travel long distances without need for services.

Very interesting if you put this trailer next to Mr Byam's Gold trailer. There are a lot of similarities.

Hi Jay:
Serial number 8435 tells us this is a 1958 model year California built 22' Airstream. The 1958 model year for California trailers began at serial number 8400, so this is an early 1958 22' trailer. Slightly higher serial number 8442 was delivered on 12-2-1957, so this trailer was built around the same time.
It obviously is more than a plain 22' Flying Cloud. I think it is the unnamed and unbadged California equivalent of the 22' World Traveler then also being built in Ohio as a specific model. In 1958, the California plant seemed far more casual about trailer models and names than Ohio. California just built and delivered travel trailers to customers or dealers as it had since 1947.
This trailer has the floor plan and tandem axle chassis of the 22' World Traveler built in Ohio. The absence of a black tank vertical vent pipe up through the bathroom lavanette (bathroom sink counter) tells us this trailer was built before the California Mobile Home Code became law around 9-15-58. The Code made residential building code specifications applicable to all mobile homes and even travel trailers built in California. Once the Code became law in California, Airstream moved all custom trailer manufacturing to the Ohio plant which was not subject to the Code and thus retained flexibility in plumbing and electrical utility placement. On 8435, the black tank vents from underneath the eyebrow located on the curbside front of the rear end cap.
WBCCI # 918 initially belonged to Archie and Mary Ann Leuenberger of Los Angeles, 25, California. As of 1964, they had not been on any national or international caravans. The fact they lived right in Los Angeles suggests the California plant built an unnamed 22' World Traveler trailer for them locally rather than forcing them go to Ohio to get one. It's a very neat old Airstream.
