Story of the Day. About three days ago I saw a local post about a stolen Airstream trailer. It piqued my interest as I am a fan of vintage trailers and Airstreams in particular. This one was obviously decades old having multiple layers of riveted aluminum on the front and rear.
Today I was going to the store and saw an old Airstream parked down the block. I stopped in the road and took a pic. When I got home I looked for the post and not finding it I shared the photo and asked if anyone knew about it. Within a few minutes, someone shared the original post with me. Several people confirmed that it was the same trailer.
I messaged the OP with a photo and told him where the trailer was. About ten minutes later I looked down the road and saw the trailer still there with a car parked alongside. At that point I called the cops, then walked down the street. The guy in the car turned out to be Jason, the owner of the trailer, responding to the location I had given him. A few minutes later the PD showed up, heard the story, checked his ID, chuckled and said, "Well, that was easy," and left.
I took a couple of pics and learned the Airstream was a
1958 Sovereign of the Road 30-foot which the owner was planning to restore. Several windows were broken or missing and the inside was fairly gutted, but the body was amazingly straight. I looked in and saw a bunch of full lawn and leaf bags just as Jason looked in and saw them for the first time. They were not his trash bags.
As I was walking home a car slowed alongside and the driver asked, "Were you checking out my Airstream?" As nonchalantly as I could muster I said, yeah, it is a beauty. He drove along toward the trailer and pulled in as I reversed course to see what would happen next.
The guy in the car asked the owner of the trailer what he thought of "his" trailer. Jason said well, not so much...that is my trailer. Dude in the car began talking about how he bought the trailer from a guy for a bag of weed and some cash, apologized, and offered to tow it back to Jason's house. Jason already had someone on the way with an SUV to pull the trailer home and had a relatively civil conversation with the guy, all things considered. I stood by until I could see that things were on an even keel and walked home.
A short time later the SUV appeared and hooked up. Dani and I walked back down so she could have a look, then walked home as they drove away with their recovered, vintage, 30-foot Airstream trailer.
