How do you identify brand & model of your coupler

How do I identify brand and model of coupler? I have a 2015 16' Sport. I just received my Anderson sway and weight distribution hitch. Literature in box says it is "incompatible with Atwood 88007, 88010, 88555 and 88600 couplers. All other Atwood couplers work fine." "Because of the unique design of these Atwood couplers, when they are combined with the Andersen Weight Distribution system there is a potential issue where some couplers can become unlatched over time (due to wear on the internal latch system). We are currently working with the folks at Atwood to come up with a permanent solution. At this time (Nov. 2013 the only official solution we endorse is to replace the coupler with a different Atwood coupler." Help please.

Thank you Bruce. I have reviewed (scanning) the thread however have failed to pick up on how to identify the brand and model of the coupler on the trailer. In storage currently but will go back out tomorrow and look again for some kind of identification on coupler. Thanks again, I appreciate you response.

Here is a PDF of Atwood couplers.

I can virtually guarantee your coupler is one of the "affected couplers" as Airstream has been using the exact same coupler for at least 30 and maybe 40 years.

BTW, I have an Andersen hitch and use it with the coupler, with slight modifications.

It's interesting that at least one AS dealer is selling the Anderson. Do they know something that we don't?

No, should have research better before purchasing I bought from Amazon.com However, if I understand correctly the sway control would work, the weight distribution with chain would not. May have an expensive paperweight.

When we learned of the coupler incompatibility we sent the hitch back to the distributor for a refund. We were not advised beforehand. Others have cut off the standard Airstream coupler and welded on one usable with the Andersen hitch. I would not attempt to use the hitch on the Airstream standard coupler and risk the trailer uncoupling from the tow vehicle.

Update. Thank you again for the advice. I had an Equal-i-zer Hitch System put on for our Christmas trip. Newbies, we need lots of help but hopefully one day I'll be able to pay it forward and help others. Thank you

Ron
