Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but we had a portion of our driveway leading to a loading dock on the barn 'paved' with something like this. First went the slightly packed topsoil, then the grids were laid, and finally the grids were filled and slightly covered with more top soil. The grass was planted after this.
The grid serves to prevent a vehicle from sinking too far into the dirt when driven over the grass, and prevents the soil from being compacted. We only use that loading dock a few times a year and it's held up well.
Here's a photo of something similar to what we have, but they do make them with a deeper grid.
