'70s Globetrotter tandem?

I was in Des Moines today, and ran across what looked like a mid-70s Globetrotter 21' in a storage lot but it had tandem axles . Unfortunately I didn't think to take any photos, and I couldn't get close enough to actually check the name plate because it was in a locked storage lot. I know that there were Safari tandems in the mid '70s, but this one looked shorter than a Safari (I had a '70 Safari single axle). I can't find any examples of a GT21 tandem on-line. Did I misjudge the length, or has anyone confirm that there was a GT21 tandem?

Roger-

Could it be one of the small late 60's Trade Winds? I think they were only 23' or so.

I don't know for sure, but it was definately post-'70 as it had the "D" shaped windows on the front, and I'd swear it was a 21'...

Roger,

First off was there a for sale sign on it?

Second question do you have room to park it?

Third, will Laurie divorce you over it?

If the answers to all three are yes, it may be time for a trip to do an intervention.

No, but that has never stopped me from buying one I've found like this before!

What, exactly, do you mean by "room" to park it? A pad, no. Driveway, no. My half-acre yard will do ok tho!

It was probably a 23'. The bodies really don't look much different...except for the tandem axle on the 23. easy to miss 2 feet...(especially since it probably isn't really a whole 2' difference ).

I'm not absolutely certain, but I'm pretty sure that all GTs from that era are single axle.

here is a brochure for 1974: http://www.batmo.com/tclife/brochure/025/

I believe 1973 was pretty much the same.

according to the vintageairstream.com photo archive, they went back and forth between single and tandem axles in the 23' model. either that, or they've got some things a little bit mixed up. What they show as a 74 has a single axle. that doesn't go along with what is posted in the brochure from 1974, though. They also show a 72 with a single axle. yet, 71 and 73, these had tandems. ???

I agree, and that's why I'm confused. My '70 Safari was a Lightweight Special version with a single axle. I think that by '72 you could order one with either single or tandem axles, and by '73 most of production was tandem. I know that in earlier years the Overlanders could also be had either single or tandem, so it wasn't a precedent in the Safaris.

I also couldn't find anything that would indicate a tandem GT, and it may have been the angle I saw it at, but I would STILL swear that it looked like a 21' based on the window arrangement.
