Verify Your Forum Account Info - Site Updates Soon
In the coming weeks, we will be moving towards a simpler login using your email address (which is private) and password but first we want to make sure the address associated with your account is accurate.
Later this week we will be prompting all forum members to verify their contact email as they login to the forum.
Many members have ancient e-mail addresses associated with their current accounts and so next week as you login we will ask you to affirm your email address is correct or to update it. If you need to update your email address please follow the prompts and then check your inbox for a confirmation email to your new address. If you are updating your e-mail address, there is a link in that email you will need to click to complete the process. You can then proceed as usual to login with your current user/pass information.
Once members have had time to verify existing addresses (or update them if needed) we will make the change to logging in with that address (a few weeks from now). We appreciate your patience as we go through this process.

Login length
Now, instead of a 3 letter login, it’s 21, simpler to just browse vs login, has this been given some thought?

I understand that this may be a bit inconvenient but logging in with your username and password is just not as secure. Currently half of your login credentials display publicly - it's a short putt to having someone make off with your account.
Your browser or password manager should be able to auto fill new info after you have prompted it once and the big issue with not logging in is that you will see more ads and not have access to all the site functions.

Virus in ad rotation... 🤔
While you're working on this, please have your tech staff review the ad rotation. The current rotation is infected with a virus. 😭🦑🐉😭 Also, it concerns me that cannot get a secure connection to the forum site. I believe that is how the ad rotation was breeches. See screen shots from today. Thanks, in advance. 👍

Thanks for the screen shot. We'll do some digging as it looks like unwanted adware (not exactly a virus but instead an unwanted ad tracking cookie). In the meantime you might clear the cache on your device and do a restart to purge the cookie.

Janet, do we know how will this apply to folks using the forums on a phone app.
Will we need to do the authentication on the desktop and then reload the app.

A 21 character password is too much. This ain’t Fort Knox.

If you are using tapatalk you will have to try either the mobile version of the site (just load up a browser on your device and navigate to the site - you will see the verification screen as you login) or a regular browser.
Once we actually change to logins with e-mail/password tapatalk will work as usual but with e-mail/pass.

Thank you Janet for your reply, I actually don't know what tapatalk is but I will keep watch for when something doesn't work and I need to login.

Thank you, thank you very much! I complete a cleaning (Malwarebytes) and restart everyday, because the malware pops up everyday... (to be honest, I call any unwanted software a virus as it makes me sick!)

I updated my password to a 24 character one, simple since I had already switched to that in my password generator. I appear to be able to login now. I have no problems with longer passwords, doing that already.
But, I just got "brave" and tried to look at something on the classifieds. Which has always been a mess, anyway. (Signup separately, different accounts, What is UP with that?) Now I am unable to login using either my old or new password.
And no, I haven't dealt with the "lost my password" process. It may or may not work, probably will, just one more annoyance with the classifieds.

Did I read that right?
A 21 digit password?
Really?
My bank doesn't require half that many.
I guess after nearly 16 years I'll have to let my membership expire.

There is no need to update your password or e-mail address for most folks. That said, if the e-mail address associated with your account is no longer correct, you will want to correct that.

Since my web browser makes it very clear, in very large, bold letters, this forum is NOT SECURE, I'd rather not use my email address to be used to scrape for more spam. I already have more than enough.

The login pages here are secure (httpS) but as noted, the rest of the site is not. We store no financial info or other sensitive content here and we long ago changed login pages (where password data is passed) to meet current security standards.
Last year google began to push websites to use https instead of http as a security update. A few months ago they began to actually began to display that little red triangle;"not secure" on browser address lines.
This is the page where user credentials are passed and the only sensitive data we store. Once a member has logged in the site reverts to http (and the alert begins to display in browsers). Using https on all pages actually breaks some things the forum. Offsite links and hosted images no longer work, ads don't display, photos, etc.
So... as you login the page is secure (https) but once you have logged in the regular site is http. Since no login/pass info is being sent on these pages we believe this is safe and reasonable. There's little we can do to change this until we move to a new forum software platform which eventually we will have to do.
You can read more about the google alerts here: https://www.wired.com/story/google-c...-secure-label/

Seems like google is behind all this to collect more accurate info on us.

Copy that!
Oh . . . the agony of entering an email address instead of user name.
Be sure to clean Internet cache and delete cookies very very often! Big Brothers and Sisters are watching our every move!
Happy Trails,
Peter
PS — Thanks Janet for the clarification that our login info is secure.

I had not seen this post until this morning, after I tried to log in. I have several email addresses but got lucky on the second one (yes, an old one but still very active). I didn't get prompted to confirm my email address and I come to the site at least once a day.
I don't know if it's possible to have it post as a 'sticky' for future notices but if so, it would be helpful. I always start at New Posts and work my way down the list.

I noticed on other forums, none are secure. (at least the ones I frequent.)

Sorry for using this thread. I'm new and trying to get a private message to ultradog. But this site says I need be be a trusted member to send a private message. I don't know how to make that happen.
Ultradog, I was hoping for a remote inspection in stillwater. My username is lgranrud and my email is larry.granrud@gmail.com.
