sponsored links appearing

It looks like magic is happening in posts: sponsored links is picking out words that relate and turning them into links!
Is this expected?? ( say for example is say van, chevy, airstream) what was plain words turn into???

Yup! commercialism rules! Annoying isn't it. Does anyone have a piece of software to block this? My pop-up stopper doesn't touch it!

I noticed this last night too - annoying! But now it's gone! Did Andy take pity on us and remove them? I'd really rather subscribe and pay up than put up with something that invasive.

Maybe it really WAS magic. I see it gone now as well. Glad someone else confirms I am not yet totally hallucinating.

Looks like non-logged viewers get the links but once logged in they are gone

They are still there, I am just testing out that technology. It's really not to invasive actually. Better than more banners right?

But you bring up a good point, if you want to have a clean interface for sharing information then I could setup an interface minus most of the ads and offer that interface in exchange for a small annual donation to offset the costs...

Where do I send the check and how soon could you get "IT" done?

(Pun intended.)

Yup, I'd be for that too. This forum is such a huge value to me as it is, I'd be glad to contribute!

To me, I think the banners are less intrusive, perhaps because I'm so used to them & sub-con. ignore them. The type face color change & double under-line of the 'matched' key words seems to distract from reading the posts 'cleanly'. I suppose that's the point, but only time will tell.

Exclamation Pay to play?

That's a sure way to drive much of the membership over to the other free Airstream information sharing sites.
I believe it best to keep this site free for members and let advertisers pay the rent.
I've never found the ads and banners so intrusive that I couldn't harvest or share info here.
I'm all in favor of voluntary donations but I fear that a mandatory subscription fee would dramatically reduce the volume of info exchange.

We will never require anyone to pay. It would only be an optional donation if users don't like all the ads.

I agree, mandatory subscription forums are useless, because they exclude so many people. But letting people who pay have different access to the same content, and still allowing those who don't pay to participate, sounds fair to me. Some people may not be bothered by the embedded links, but I found them very distracting.

I subscribe at geocaching.com, and they have some bonus features for members, but non-members can use the site and play the game without missing much. I mostly do it to support the site. I would be glad to do the same thing here. Geocahcing uses paypal to do the subscriptions, and every year it yanks my fees out of my paypal account, pretty much without bothering me at all. I think it's pretty slick, and I don't forget my annual dues.

Pogo.com, a very popular gamesite has a similar offering.......a free site gorged with ads and "Club Pogo", a paysite with no ads.

Normally, I am annoyed with "me too" responses, and seldom make them. But Stefrobts' post sums up my exact feelings on this topic.

So, "Me too!" for the second time on this thread.
