Problems with the connection on this server

I have a T1 connection to the Internet in my office which is faster than DSL.

I have been having problems with pages timing out it appears the site is just hanging.......

Either the ISP which handles this sites traffic is not giving enough band width to this site or it's some thing else, this happens everyday.

Sometimes it works normally, sometimes it will not works for a long time.

fwiw, I've noticed it, too...also on a T-1, but its shared w/ 150 other people...design people, who like to e-mail big ol' files back and forth all freakin day.. So my first thought at these times is usually, "its probably us"...but lately, it hasn't been. I've got network monitoring tools that show me the activity on the line.

Router

We just upgraded our DSL to a super high speed DSL - and ended up having to replace all of our routers at 4 locations. If your router is designed for DSL it may choke your internet. A good new T-1 router may cost as little as $40.

Just a thought.

Nope. They own the URL name but the forum contents, software and server all belong to Social Knowledge LLC. See bottom of this page.

The problem is at the server, not at our end.

Like anything else things happen and the reasons are many. I provide Internet services to conventions and exhibitors here at the St. Louis convention center and I have to deal with these situations all the time. Unfortunately once the outgoing packet leaves your site, the routes and hops it takes can be many. It goes into the cloud.

We just had to deal with a thorny issue a couple of weeks ago where a user going out from our 15 megabit fiber pipe, was getting slower download speeds than from a 3 megabit bonded T1 pipes? Why? We still don't know at this time other than the fiber pipe went down to Dallas before heading out and the T1 takes a different path.

Find somebody on your IT or Communications staff who can do a trace route ping from the command prompt on your Windows PC. That can show you all the hops taken on your path from your site to the Social Knowledge site. It will show you the timing between each hop and will tell you where the bottle neck is. Ping doesn't always work on all routers but it's worth a try.

Andy has done a lot of adjustments moving us to different servers and updating the hardware. Unfortunately the bug is still there and it rears its ugly head at the worst times. I've gotten in the habit that when I create a new thread, to copy my post to the clipboard before sending the post. That way if it times out, it's just a matter of pasting from the clipboard and sending the post again. It's ugly but it saves having to rekey the post.

The problem is on this site's server side of things. At times, I think they run it on an old 286 machine.

That is what I will start doing because I tried about 4-5 times yesterday and ended up posting a new thread twice. Thanks for the info.

I have noticed that I have been getting the "page cannot be displayed" message quite often lately on this site, both at home (cable) and at work (satellite).

It looks like different parts of this site are on different servers.

I go on Reefcentral.com a lot they have the same software.

They get way more traffic 2-3,000 online at onetime.

Never any problems like this

I'm having problem getting to this site lately, too. Sometimes it takes 9-10 tries over a period of 15-20 minutes. It either times out, or a blank screen appears. It happens at random times, but mostly at night. At first, I thought it may be a glitch with Firefox, but it's the same with Internet Explorer. I have cable, and other sites appear in a blink. Once I get on the forum, posting isn't a problem. I'm just happy to be here whenever I can.

Me too. Sometimes the page is unavailable. Today I was posting a reply, and I got the "page not available" message, but when I opened the site in another window the reply had posted OK. I seem to have a connection problem on this site 2 - 4 times a day.

There may be a limit set to the number of users allowed on at one time.

The host would charge less to serve the site with that limitation.

THe owner should look into this ASAP

I've had the same issues as well. Andy R is looking at more and bigger servers. We just keep growing!
