One PC won't let me in!

OK, I'm on my laptop right now and was able to log in and post this...it's my office PC. But my home based PC won't allow me into this site. I am able to see the site and try to log in, but I can't post...it always refers me back to the log in window, even though after I try it says the usual welcome Astro, thanks for logging in. What is the problem? I did a spybot/adware scan and found a bug in the windows files, but I quarantined it. Still no use. That PC is one where my son plays games online too. I hope some bug didn't change my IP address. Couls that be it?

You need to check the windows security settings and the cookies settings.

If the security is set too high, or you have cookies disabled it can cause trouble. IP addresses have nothing to do with the ability to log in.

If you go to the tools/Internet options/privacy tab you can edit the security for web sites. The button is at the bottom of the screen. Add www.airforums.com and allow.

Of course all of this assumes you are on a windows box and can make these changes based on permissions.

I am not sure that either of these are absolute remedies, but they may help:

1.) Go to START - - PROGRAMS - - ACCESSORIES - - SYSTEM TOOLS - - Disk Cleanup. Run Disk Cleanup to clear out all temporary files - - especially Internet temporary files.

2.) Check your browser settings to verify that Cookies are enabled. Also, it might be worth a try to see if custom settings have been enabled that either block "unknown" cookies, or permit Cookies only from "cataloged" sources. If your system happens to have any filtering software installed, it would be wise to check to see whether it is doing anything to "block" or "filter" cookies.

3.) Go to START - - PROGRAMS - - ACCESSORIES - - SYSTEM TOOLS - - Disk Defragmenter. Run Disk Defragmenter. This is a long-shot and isn't likely to solve the problem, but should improve your system's performance if current fragmentation of files is significant.

Good luck in locating your PC issue.

Kevin

Thank you . I'm now able to get in from my home PC...it was the cookies security thing. Wow, it's good to be back. I can't believe how addicting this site is.

Please don't take this to 'religious' status, BUT, ...does the Apple platform avoid most of these (including virus/worm) net problems as a Windows (r) system??
I'm a Windows user having some probs & considering a hardware (& possibly o/s) upgrade.

While you avoid many of the issues with viruses and worms that can invade a Windows system, you acquire another unique set of quirks. As a Public School Technology Coordinator, I worked with both platforms for a number of years and was very relieved when the school administration decided to focus upon a single-platform Windows environment. In the five plus years that I worked in the dual environment, I found the technical support from Apple to be less available than from the PC Vendor that we utilized - - and many of the parts for the Apple were proprietary meaning that it was difficult buy generic parts for many situations.

Quite honestly, in the larger picture, I think the platform decision is more what you are familiar with and accustomed to operating. Both platforms will provide you with a series of operating quirks. Now that I have returned to teaching, I know my preference is for Windows and I absolutely dread those days when I must teach in the Macintosh lab.

There are no viruses that effect the Apple platform. With that platform, you'll still get e-mail with viruses/worms attached like you do now, but the viruses/worms won't do anything if you try to open them.

At work I use Windows XP Pro and Apple OS X everyday. I'm really happy with both systems. My Windows machine is very reliable (I only have to restart it about once a month). The Apple system is just as good. All e-mail goes thru the Apple system, which is impervious to the viruses. Because the Windows XP machine never receives e-mail, the computer remains in pristine condition.

I couldn't be happier!
