How to stop attachment JPG files from rotating
Some of my pics get rotated from the way they are displayed on my Windows 10 desktop. What is the "foolproof" technique to ensure that they display as intended on the forum?

I upload my photos to https://imgur.com/ first. Then insert the image into the post using the "insert image" button on the editor, which allows you to paste a link to Imgur. The pictures don't rotate and you can place the picture anywhere within the text you are posting.

Yes, cropping them will fix that.

Use a screen grabbing tool. On Windows they provide the Snipping Tool. Search for it in your programs. Set it to rectangular, grab the area over your picture and save as a JPG. Upload that and it will be "upright".
I prefer a free program named GreenShot (getgreenshot.org) It allows for screen grabs but also has a great annotation function so you can add highlights, arrows, text etc.
ps: On the Macbook the program of choice is Skitch. Screen grabs and annotations.

In ios (apple) photos, I use edit to just rotate the photo 360* and then press done/save. For some reason this seems to lock in the correct orientation, even though there is no change to the orientation.

Crop or rotate. I find rotating one degree works. Any minimal edit works.

Warning, nerdy info incoming!
What's going on here is that some mobile phones (especially iPhones) use a feature of EXIF image metadata to store an "orientation tag" rather than adjusting the actual image to match the orientation of the device when the image was taken.
Older-tech web servers (i.e. MOST web servers) don't notice that EXIF tag and sometimes strip out all EXIF data as a way to anonymize the images. So, if your iPhone photo hasn't been manipulated by another tool and you weren't holding your iPhone upright when the photo was taken, some sites will show the photo rotated 90 degrees (sometimes 270 degrees if you're left-handed.)
Editing the photo with most basic image-editing software saves it in the orientation shown without relying on the EXIF orientation tag and then it "just works" most anywhere you upload it.

Thanks everyone
EXIF - GIMP always nags me about it.
I think my process s/b open it with PAINT, shrink it some and save it. Then using the Microsoft Photos (default windows editor) rotate it - even it that means 4x90 degrees and save. Not to much of a burden since I don't upload that many photos.
