How do you create a link using a word instead of a url?

I want to know how you link to another web site using a word instead of the long URL. I've seen it done by some of you and it sure makes a cleaner post. Jamie

When you get to the point you want to insert the link, type the word you want to display and highlight it with your mouse. Click on the Insert Link Icon (looks like the earth) on the edit toolbar and enter the link information in the window. Like this, azflycaster.

Hi Jamie -- First have another browser window to the link opened or already have the URL copied to your clipboard. In a post window type in your text, including the keyword(s) you wish to hyperlink. Drag across to highlight the keyword(s). Go just above the text entry window and click the browser+chainlink symbol. A small window will open, move your cursor there and paste in the copied URL. Click Okay and you're in business

Example: Price vs. Condition

I didn't know you could do it that way. I have been going to user CP going to edit signature, going to the bottom left where it says IMG code is off, clicking on IMG and a window opens with examples on how to post links to posts or threads or websites. I usually have two windows open and type as shown. My way sure seems convoluted... Now I will have to try Richard's smarter way!

Here's a try... I'm Game! WOW it worked! Have some more shortcuts I can learn?

Another alternative I have found works is to simply copy and paste the url string in the post. You won't have the control you are looking for with the url tied to a word, but it does give information about the link.

Here is an example to a weather website where I just entered the url -- when I submitted my post, it automatically substituted the string you see here: National and Local Weather Forecast, Radar, Map and Report

OK, here I go with an attempt. This is a link to a 3-D photo of a lava tube at Lava Beds National Monument that we will be visiting in a few weeks.

Woo Hoo! Great. Thanks Bob.
I guess I should have picked a different link because maybe not everybody has a pair of 3-D glasses hanging around the house.

My 3-D glasses sit right on top of my monitor. If I won't lose any rivets I have to confess that my browser homepage is Astronomy Picture of the Day. They have occasional 3-D shots. At least I get a diversion when I turn the 'puter on before I head over to Montel Povich's blog ... ... er, AIRForums I mean!!!

I apologize for resurrecting an old thread, but it's the closest match I found while searching.

Currently when inserting a link in a public or private message, the full thread title is the default name displayed for the link.

When inserting a link in a signature line, the url is the default name displayed for the link rather than the full thread title.

I was researching a how-to request from a fellow forum member and noticed the inconsistency. Not sure if this is a known issue, a user-controllable setting, or even an issue. I didn't check profile comments or any other message functions that I don't know about.

I use Opera 10.10 as my browser.

Thanks.

Thanks.
First Ike I never will understand why members EVER apologize for re-visiting and reviving older threads. Lord knows we have way way too many "new" threads around here. And from my long time observer seat, I will opine that the older input by many great members who rarely or never are seen here any more, was far superior in most respects. Of course (and thankfully) there are exceptions, but where the 'pioneers' went and why they left is a great "dirty little mystery" around these parts IMHO.

Now as to the link tricks, I actually think it is foolish to use a descriptive word for a link. IMHO the whole URL is much more sensible. A single word or phrase is sometimes overlooked. Where a URL gets my attention. (I know the link is another color but still often missed).
Further when a link does not work, it is much easier to research what the poster had in mind if the WHOLE URL is available. Just my thinking but I notice few use the whole URLs.

Miscellaneous Options
Show your signature
Automatically parse links in text
Automatically retrieve titles from external links
Disable smilies in text

I think (but am not certain) that by un-checking the 2nd & 3rd options in the above Misc. Options box [that is below every full reply tablet] , you will have more control. The 2nd one (parse) is particularly useless IMHO and I try to always remember to disable (uncheck) it.

Another way to do it is by entering the html code directly. For instance the text
PHP Code:
[URL=www.lanmike.com/5200]Whatever I feel like entering here[/URL
becomes Whatever I feel like entering here when posted and the link points to the web location after the = sign.

(Ignore the "PHP Code" tag in the example - I had to use a trick to prevent the board software from interpreting the text that I wanted to show you as a link and display it as text instead.)
