How do I reduce the size of a picture file?

OK, I should probably know how to do this but I have been having a real time of it...

I have a Canon PowerShot SD110 3.2 MP camera and use the Canon software to download the pictures to my laptop. The files show up as .jpg files ranging in size from 756kb to 1300kb size files which are too big to post. How do I shrink these down so I can share my pics?

Using "Photoimpact", I choose "Format - Dimensions" to resize my photos. Make your pics 640 X 480 or smaller, and they will upload. I'm sure your Canon software has a similar function. If it does not, Mr. Gates' "Photo Editor" software (available in Windows 2000 & XP) has the right funtcion.

try using the "save as" function in your canon software.

it should allow you to select the file size when you save it to your favorite file.

that's how my canon software works, for what it is worth! also, you should be able to adjust the camera to take photos in the preferred size.

re res

Deo,

My camera has a low resolution mode that I always use when I expect to post the pictures to the web. Also, don't forget that cropping a photo will save you some space too.

As a Mac user i-photo is very useful for changing picture size.

Bring on the pics...

Steve

I always make a duplicate before resizing though so I keep the high resolution photo for later...you never know when you may want to use the original for something else.

You can use Windows Paint to resize a photo.
Open your photo, along the top menu click on Image, then choose Attributes....( or press CTRL E) Change the numbers (evenly) to 640 x 480 or what ever you want to reduce it to. and save it (preferably with a different name so you do not loose the original)

Good Luck

Another neat program is called "JPEG Optimizer". What this program does is reduce the FILE SIZE without changing the physical dimensions of the photo. Of course as you reduce file size, image quality decreases somewhat. On some pictures you can tell a difference and on some you can't see a bit, they look the same. I try and reduce my photos down to about 30K for internet posts.

Hey DEO, I have the Cannon also and have pestered Balrgn into showing me how to reduce some of my pictures; however, my Cannon will not let me take pictures that are actually small enough to upload here without resizing. Well, it may let me shoot them small enough, BUT it won't tell me how to do it in any language I can understand. Don't feel as if you should be able to get this done. I thought I could read instructions and do it too. Doesn't always happen. I think whoever wrote the instruction booklet assumes you already know how to use the camera and just wanted a thick book to add to your collection of books that came with your cell phones.

If you have windoze xp, there's a really easy, and FREE solution you can download from MS.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

go to this page, and download the "image resizer". lets you quickly resize pics for e-mail or internet posting. when its installed, you can just right-click on a jpeg file from windows explorer, and one of the options on the context (pull-down) menu is "resize pictures". click that, and another small window opens that gives you a few options....not alot...very easy.

what I do is go to the folder where my original pics are stored, make a sub-folder named "small", then copy the originals into this "small" directory. then I run the re-sizer on the whole batch, selecting the option to "resize originals".

you can run it on the original folders and have it create copies in the same place but it gets rather cluttery that way. what it'll do is make a copy of each file with the word "small" appended to it. "img_1234.jpg, img_1234 (small).jpg...." just looks messy to me.

Thanks!
