Glitch when clicking on thread?
This has been happening for the past week or so - whenever I click on a thread to view, I get directed to random posts within the thread.
Rarely does the page load at thread #1, so I have to scroll to the top (or I have to click to get to the first page).
It seems to make no difference whether I've viewed the thread before or not. As an example, I just clicked on the Western Women Silver Sisters 2010 Spring Rally thread for the first time, and it popped me to post # 169 on page 13.
I regularly clean my cache, delete history, etc... and I'm puzzled.
Any suggestions?

I've been experiencing the same thing -- and also regularly clean my cache, delete history, log out and back in .... etc.

This was mentioned also on another thread a few days ago.
I discovered this today:
I just discovered that this works differently on the portal and on "new posts".
IF I access the thread from new posts, it functions as I would expect it to and as it always has. If I access the thread from the portal, it goes to the first unread post no matter whether I click on the title or the little arrow box.

Ken

If you've ever "marked the forums read", that's where the software assumes you have read everything up to, and will start you off at that point. For example, if you mark them read today, you will automatically go to the first post after that point when you open a thread.

It jumps to the last post I read in a thread. I love it, I don't have to scroll and find where I last read.

Okay, I'll bite. As far as I know I have never "marked the forums read", but computrers and I have not always gotten along without disagreements. Now my question is how do I un "mark the forums read"?

Yes, but that is what the little box with the down arrow just to the left of the title is there for. It takes you to the first unread post. The title is supposed to take you to the top of the thread.

It wasn't that way two weeks ago. Clicking on the title would take take me to the first post. clicking on the arrow left of the title would take me to the first unread post. I have never marked a thread as read and wouldn't know how to if I wanted to.
Go try it and see the difference in how it works on the Portal versus how it works on the New Posts listing.

I am with w7ts. I have never marked a thread as read. I just want to go back to un-read unless I purposely ask for the first unread post.
Anyone have an answer that will get me back to where I was and want to be?

I don't know how to mark read/unread...
And I was also having the same problem when attempting to go to a new thread to read it, I would randomly land somewhere within the thread and have to click on the page numbers to get me to the first page. Sometimes I think it's just me... but at least this time I know it's not.
Also, occasionally I am randomly getting a "white background" (with all text seemingly the same) when clicking on a thread from the forums tab (not the shades of blue and gray as normal on my monitor.) Also assumed this was my computer, but... I did have thoughts wondering if there was a "fake" site out there, however it wasn't asking me for personal information.

I am digging into it. Typically if you click on a thread it will mark it for you as a read thread, if you click on it again when you come back it should go to the first or last post in the thread depending on how you have your settings done. FWIW I have mine to put them in reverse chronological order with newest ones first.
What browsers and OS are you using? I am running FF 3.6 and Windoze XP pro. I am getting the shift to the first unread.

I don't know what is supposed to do for sure.
However, go to the new posts listing instead of the Portal. There no matter if the thread has been read or not, Clicking on the title of the thread will bring me to the very first post. If I have read some of the thread previously, there will be a link on the left side of the title bar that says go to first unread. On the new post list there is also a small box with a down pointing Carat just to the left of the thread title. If I click on that instead of the title, it will take me to the first unread instead of the top of the thread. This is EXACTLY the way the portal listing worked until about two weeks ago. Now it goes to the first unread no matter where I click. It seems that there should be a way to go to the top or first unread depending on where I click just like it does in the new posts listing. Since this is the second time I have posted this whole explanation I would appreciate if if someone in power would acknowledge that they read and understand what I am saying.
Regards,
Ken

The issue that you are all talking about came about recently. Andy made an announcement on 2-21 that said the portal page would now take you to the first unread post in that thread.

OK, well that explains it I guess.
Do you know why,? since there is already a button there to perform that function. Now, unless there is something else I haven't discovered there is no way to get to the first post in a thread with out working back page by page. Not real convenient.

I regret the loss of control I once had, with no real improvement or addition of functions that I can see. Rather a loss of a function I used to employ as I wished.
Must be something that is not apparent.

This is the post. I found it.

First of all I hope it has a typo otherwise it doesn't make sense.
Second of all, if this change seemed like a good idea. why not then make the button to the left of the title go to the first post instead of it just being redundant?
It is not that this is such a big deal that I can't work around. It is the fact that, as far as I can tell, it was not brought up to see if we wanted it first, tied with the fact that no one, who knows what other options might have been available, has addressed this thread. This is not the only thread on this issue. There were several posts on the "new software features - ask here thread" that were not addressed by anyone.
I am frustrated because it looks to me there is an option available so we could access the threads from the portal both ways. However the only person who apparently knows the answers and could either fix the problem, or explain why not, is inaccessible. In the last two weeks, I have sent 3 PMs to Andy R asking questions about how to do something on the forums and have received no replies at all.
Granted this forum is free unless we choose to donate, but I would like to feel that the users have some input on how it functions.
I have made a suggestion of a way to satisfy people who want it either way. Is it asking to much to have that responded to, even if it is no it can't or won't be done?
Regards,
Ken

I'm still landing in seemingly random spots in a thread from the portal.
Sometimes I land in the first unread post - that's understandable.
But there are times when it lands me in the middle of a thread I've never viewed before. I just clicked on the 2010 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta! thread for the first time and I landed on post #21. I can safely say I've never viewed that thread before....
This happens both at work and at home. Both places I'm using Firefox 3.6 and XP (work) and Vista (home).

For most people this would be just a minor annoyance and could be remedied with a simple click. For me however, confined to a slow dial-up, it is time consuming. I can now make a cup of coffee while waiting to get back to the beginning of a thread that I have never seen before, especially when photos are involved. I am finding myself avoiding looking at threads if I had not gotten to them at the beginning.
To me this is definitely not an improvement, but simply the elimination of an option that folks like me have used effectively to complement their equipment and services.
I will not be leaving, but this will certainly limit my use of the forums and my participation.
Unless there was a monetary savings involved with this action I cannot see the reason behind the change. ?????????

My head hurts
I have decided that I will feel better if I quit beating my head against the wall. This issue has been on two separate threads for more than a few days. As near as I can tell there has been no interest shown by anyone in a position to do anything. My suggested ways that it could be mitigated also have met with no response. The eBay links problem is going the same way.
I am going to start ignoring the things that are messing up and just work around them. It will be better for my frustration level.
Regards,
Ken
