Forum Software Update?

Are there any plans to update the forum software?

vBulletin 5 was released in 2012.
In late 2017, a post by Technical Support Lead, Wayne Luke, confirmed that vBulletin 3 was now considered to be "End of Life" software, with no further development of the series planned.

Is this a security risk for us as users?

FYI, Peter, Janet H posted this in the Firefox Adding Extra Lines thread on 3/24/20 almost a year ago:

It's patched and stable and so we're staying put for the time being.

Please trust that we all have the sites best interests at heart. We want a stable, secure and vibrant site. Currently we have that and while there are newer platforms out there we want to make sure that when we move to a new platform it's for the right reasons, that it's fully tested and will serve us well for years to come. Air forums wasn't just 'left behind'. It's a conscious choice we made - balancing member needs, site stability and the difficulties of moving a large and complex site to a new platform against the temptation to have the latest shiny software.

We will be moving to Xenforo sometime this year and have been patiently waiting for that platform to mature.
Janet, thanks for any Xenforo updates . . .

Also . . . I have been getting a lot of these error messages in the last week:

Is there some kind of flood control going on this week, Janet?

Thank you for all that you do, in keeping AirForums up and running!

Thanks for the reply Peter. That is good to hear.

This makes since since that project is an old vb dev. It looks like the project takes security seriously. Some of these features look really great as well, like the modern like button instead of the second pm button. Some of the features for taking conversations outside of the eye of google look really great as well.

Appears to have been a DOS, Denial of Service attack. It appears to have stopped. I have not seen them before today but it was heavy this morning. Are you still getting them?

Sorry, I do not. I'm still learning this software. When I'm nearly educated is usually when upgrades appear and I have to start over.

I can give you some general update... while there is no specific eta, we have begun work towards this change. As you are probably aware AIR is one of several forums under the RV Life umbrella. Almost all of these boards are running the same software/version. We need to leave vbulletin behind but were unwilling to move to the still relatively new xenforo until it was more stable. last year XF version 2 was released and is now looking pretty stable.

We recently moved one of the smaller RV forums to XF 2 as our first test. We'll see how it works - how members like it and what sort of addons we'll need to build.

AIR has a bunch of custom built plugins that drive various sections of the forum and functions. XF does not have these tools although they can be built if needed. We're being cautious as a conversion is a one way trip.... tiny steps.

I had a chance to play around with the like system on RVforums and it is very nice and responsive. It is way less clunky. I am looking forward to the upgrades.

The image upload system is much improved as well. There is no need to save an image to your computer now. You can just copy and paste right into the wysiwyg and the image will immediately upload. This is going to be a huge time saver for me.

Hi

I take it that we are still on vB 3.x?

Edit a bit later:

Ok, finally got the bottom of a page to load ( it's been a while since that happened).

Powered by vB 3.8.8 Beta 1

So yup, we are on 3.x

Interesting that when I started this post, there was only one post *showing* in the thread .... crazy stuff ....

FYI a reminder of this "Cloudfare DDos protection" thread which was recently active with various issues, such as the slow speeds for loading pages:
