Hi,
We are in Michigan and looking at indoor storage for the winter. The storage person says to bring a cover to cover it while in indoor storage? Why would you cover the trailer inside? Just wondering if this is standard practice and, if so, what kind of cover would I get for a 2020 Caravel? Sorry if this is a total newbie question in advance!

The common thought is to not cover an Airstream for fear of damaging the clearcoat. If you do want to cover your Airstream the best cover is made by "Calmark". Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Probably. A cover on an Airstream stored indoors should be fine. No wind to whip the cover around.

The "Calmark" covers are custom ordered for your application. Very specific measurements are taken so that the cover fits snuggly and there are several sewn in straps to minimize any movement of the cover.

I have indoor storage in an old automobile factory. The roof has some leaks and sometimes there's water on the floor. I've tried it both ways. I only cover when I know I'll get a water streak where one is parked. I'll take the dust and grime over the risk of bringing grime up onto the trailer. The plastic has to sit somewhere while you're on the road, and usually that is the ground. Who knows what ions are in the grime, calcium, chloride, sodium, magnesium and maybe more. All good agents to start corrosion. I prefer to leave mine uncovered. I've got one that's polished and it definitely does better uncovered.

What I heard is you shouldn't cover an Airstream because of the wind causing rubbing from the cover. Since you will be inside, no wind, no problem. The parachute sounds like a good idea. Otherwise look for a very soft cover.

Hmm, I do not cover my coach in covered storage. I have a 50’x20’ individual heated garage so don’t worry about birds or other such things. My antique Chris Craft boats are also in inside storage with dirt floor and enclosed building. Those boats I cover with their travel cover - a triple felt cover with a sunbrella canvas overcover. If it were me I would not cover.

My only question is why the owner of the facility said you should cover it. Perhaps there is a problem with birds in the rafters? I would cover it then to prevent bird droppings. The only real damage to my 2006 25FB has been caused by birds. I have about 5 places where the droppings have eaten through the clear coat.

I keep my boat covered when it's in indoor storage (In/Out Rack service) due to the dust, birds and the exposed seating surfaces. The forklift would drive in/out all day and it was impossible to keep birds out.

My Airstream lived indoors at DC Storage, Hudsonville MI. It's a great place to keep any RV and nobody covers their campers there. I didn't ever see evidence of birds as their buildings are kept closed.

works well, no issues
we can get over 2M of snow in our area

the cover even comes with door access to get while still covered

Expensive?, not if you keep it for 10 years and compare to annual storage costs
plus less chance of theft or break-in at your house vs remote storage with no winter access
