Community Tagline Contest, Phase I - Submissions

Over the months to come we will be working on various initiatives. One of them includes branding. That being said, our brand needs to tell others who we are. What we need is an official tagline.

"A name alone just isn't enough. You've got to explain in a few words what it is you do. That's the job of the tagline.

Remember, unless you're terribly famous, no one knows what you do or what you sell. That's why you need a tagline. It's one of the smartest investments you'll make.

It is the chance to tell others who we are in a few simple words. Imagine that you have t-shirt and are at a campground wearing it. There is a guy in line behind you at the store and he is looking at the back of your shirt. He sees our logo (new official logo to be developed) and below it reads the tagline. That tagline needs to catch his attention, get the message of who/what we are and entice him to come checkout our community.

This is your chance to help Airstream Forum out and put your creative juices to work thinking up a catchy tagline for our community.

For the next 4 weeks, please post your idea for a community tagline to this thread. We will periodically list them all together in the second post of this thread. Then we will start with a multiple selection vote where we will whittle down the entries to the top selections. As needed we will have more multi-selection votes to keep trimming down the entries. Finally once we have clearly determined the top 3 entires, we will have a single selection vote to determine our permanent tagline. The whole process might take a while and seem a bit overboard but in the end we will have a great tagline!

We also did this on www.DiscussCooking.com (another site I manage) and you can see here how it worked 2nd Round Vote & Final Vote.

We are also in the middle of doing this on Cruisers & Sailing Forums and you can see 1st Round Vote here.

Official Rules:

• You may enter up to 5 taglines.
• Taglines should be short (as few words as possible)
• Post your taglines to this thread and we will periodically move them to the second post and delete the posts in this thread.
• The winner gets $50 (sent via PayPal).

Note: this thread is going to be kept clean (ie. when we add the entries to the 2nd post, we will be deleting them from the thread. General comments will also be deleted during those clean up times)

I have re-opened this thread although I don't have clear direction on if we can user or not use the word Airstream in our tagline. I should be getting some clarification from Airstream, Inc on this by Friday. I just did not want to slow down this effort waiting for them. If we have to make changes to the rules on terms we can/cannot include, then we will do so as needed.

I am waiting to hear back from Airstream, Inc about their position to find out if we can have the word Airstream in the tagline or not. They came after us back in 2003 because of our logo and domain name. To the best of my knowledge they have not gone after other sites like AirstreamTrailers.com or AirstreamMotorhomes.com so maybe they have a new view on this.

I have emailed repeatedly (to my contact at Airstream, Inc) and have been waiting to hear back. If we don't hear back soon all submissions with the word Airstream in them will have to be thrown out and we will be changing our domain name to AIRForums.com so we don't have to worry about Airstream, Inc coming after us.

I hope I hear from them soon. I'd rather work with Airstream but we will keep moving forward if we have to.

the new tim is more relaxed on this issue, i think.

given you already have permission to use the word a/s in the forum name,

adding it again to the tag line seems to be a given.

IF the winning choice includes it.

i thought rick's question of using the a/s name was irrelevent (no offense intended).

it's everywhere in the forum headings and other tagline-like places.

Wow, that would change everything...without the word "Airstream" or "Airstreamer" in the URL or in the tagline it's going to be really tough to describe ourselves to an unknowing public. The tag line only works with "Airstream" missing if it is attached to www.airforums.com

I would suggest reopening the contest for submissions if our beloved manufacturers name is prohibited.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all. We are going to go ahead and change domain names. That being said, we need to be extra careful that we don't even come close to violating Airstream, Inc's trademarks with our new tagline/logo.

It is my understanding that it is the use of the word Airstream in conjunction with a trailer, motorhome or other other camping stuff that will cause a violation. Maybe one of our sleuth members can dig up the filing with the Trademark office and post a link here for review.

If I am correct, then it would be best for us to avoid the use of the word Airstream in our tagline. We can still use an Airstream in our logo but only if we do not have the word Airstream in our tagline (or domain name).

I think we can use the word Airstream in our tagline but would have to be very precise in the way we design our logo. I think it's wisest to remove the word Airstream from the tagline all together just to make sure we err on the side of caution.

(Isn't it ironic that in the last year they were trying to add the Airstream name to the WBCCI and at the same time pushed us away from using it in our name!?!)

From my understanding as it is now, we can have in our logo:
- Our domain name (AIRForums.com), tagline (without the word Airstream) and an image of an Airstream in the logo.
- Our domain name (AIRForums.com), tagline with the word Airstream in the tagline, and nothing related to camping, trailers, outdoors, motorhomes in our logo.

If it were up to me, i would choose a tagline without the word Airstream and an image that includes some shiny silver with rivets (side of an airplane of course)

We are moving forward with our tagline contest and creating a new logo. In accordance with our current licensing agreement I wanted to ask you what criteria we need to follow to make sure this logo does not violate Airstream, Inc's trademarks.

It is my understanding that the use of the word Airstream in conjunction with graphics containing a trailer, motorhome or other other camping related item that will cause a violation. Could you provide me with some guidance on how to proceed so we can rest assured that Airstream, Inc will not consider our logo or tagline a violation of your trademarks?
