Acronyms vs. Abbreviations
OK... OK... Let me just throw this out as food for thought. I have not found definitive statements on this topic so I suppose it's just my opinion.
Acronyms, abbreviations and internet shorthand are not the same. Acronyms can be pronounced as a word such as Radar = RAdio Detecting And Ranging, Laser = Light Amplified Stimulated Emission of Radiation, Snafu = Situation Normal All Fouled Up, WHO = World Health Organization.
Abbreviation are not necessarily pronouncable. For instance amt = amount, assoc = association
Internet shorthand such as DH, IMHO, etc. is a relatively new phenomenon and does not seem to fall into the category of acronym or abbreviation so I think it has it's own definition.
