Main door lock replacement? DIY? 1967 Caravel

I have a 1967 Caravel inherited. The door lock is missing. I am good with mechanicals and fabrication. I saw a replacement door lock for $850. I am not that much of a purist!

What would be the simplest DIY lock that will hold the door shut and secure it?

Thanks, Bill

Take a look at vintagecampers.com. The Pipers have been very helpful for me in the past. They have L-100 and L-200 retro lock kits. You can also contact Montanablue for assistance. Good luck

I had a 66 Trade Wind with Bargman L-100 lock problems. I was able to "win" an auction on e-bay for a "used" Bargman L-100 for $220. Then I combined the two locks into one good one. They are $50 locksets for big money as they are rare. The problem is the darn 3 1/2" set back that Airstream used due to the cast aluminum door framework and other reasons. Vintage Trailer Supply sells a lock bolt that fits a regular Bargman. Regular Bargman locksets are a bit more common, so you can convert it to a "Airstream Bargman" if you find one.

MontanaBlue is a regular here on Airstream Forums. He is a Bargman expert and has locksets for sale. Cole3444 may have one too. You can send these guys a private message and see what they may have in stock at what price.

I could not figure out how to make a hardware store standard lockset work in my Airstream door. Maybe some others have figured it out.

David

Bargman L100 and L200 locks

This is Montanablue and I can help you with your lock problem. I have new and used Bargman L100 and L200 locks. Attached pictures are of an L200. L100 has a round inside handle and L200 has a lever.

I can rebuild the locks as well depending on condition. I have lots of spare parts.

Why don't you send me an email to r_whiten@hotmail.com so we can communicate and send pictures. There is an underscore after the r

I purchased an NOS L200 from Montanablue. It works like a charm. Great service.

Bargman Lock

Here are some pics of what I have, one is a L100 no key and a L100 with a L200 interior handle without key. Locksmith can rekey the locks and VTS has the long bolt. PM me if interested.
