It took me 4 hours but this endcap is finally shining.

That’s looking great. When we brought our 66 home from CA, we had no idea what we were getting into. The skin was patina in color with a lot of black streaks from a tarp or cover of some sort. We used Nuvite 9 just to cut through the crud. Anyway, we later switched to the air wheels and cyclo to get the final shine. A lot of work, but we thought it was worth the effort. Thanks for the updates.

Sorry for the delay...here is the Laveo toilet mounted. The toilet mounting plate added a few holes in the fiberglass that would be hidden by a regular toilet if someone wanted to go back original.

The front end caps had some heavy corrosion left. I got through the worst of it but it took at lot of work. I am dropping the scaffolding down today. The metal on the sides is going to be much easier it seems.

How often do you guys polish your trailers?

That is nice, and does not mess up the original fiberglass at all. Well done. Thanks for the pic!

Lookin' good!

I started polishing Abby in 2012. I finished in 2013. The street side still looks pretty good, but it's time to re-polish.

That was cool to look through your process Lance.

Once I am done with this first cut would it be wise to wash the trailer down with soap and water before going to the secondary compound? I have been wiping things down pretty well with mineral spirits as I go, but I have flung compound and aluminum everywhere.

Thanks. I hope it helps.

I don't think it's a bad idea to wash between steps. If you look at the video in the "Strip 'N Polish" thread I posted from Zephyr, they acid wash between each step. It is the best way to get a clean surface to polish. It can be kinda impractical for most people, however.

Polishing 12-15h mark

I keep coming across signs of heavy corrosion. I probably have some more work to do but the day light gave out.

There really are a lot of surface imperfections. I guess I will spend some more time on the corner and the door. I am not happy with the results.

Running gear and axle and tire talk

I should be about 1 month out from the new axle. I want make sure that all the other running gear is up to a long road trip at that time.

The tires on this appear to be from 2016 maybe? Anyways here is what I am seeing:
FREESTAR
NSS-01-1816
DOT 00B 38TB3U
5 plies 2 poly 2 steel 1 nylon
Max load single 2830lbs at 80psi
10PR load range E 117/112L
225/75/15

I don't know much about trailer tires, but I assume the weight rating is per single tire and two tires can handle around 5k pounds? if not

The cat scale receipt says this weighs 2900 pounds. That is with the weight distribution bars on and all tanks full.

Are these tires larger than factory? The new axle has the 33 degree angle so I should be gaining a bit of ground clearance. According to Colin it will be 1.5-2 inches. This size tire should fit a bit better. Right now it seems uncomfortable close to the aluminum.

I would like to look into getting a TPMS also. It looks like the type that go on the valve stem need a metal stem.

What wheel and compound are you using?

I see the texture of the surface you described previously.

PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a bar of the FORMAX Black Magic to try.

Yes, that's correct when inflated to 80psi cold.

The cat scale receipt says this weighs 2900 pounds. That is with the weight distribution bars on and all tanks full.

In '66 it probably came with 7.00-15 or 6.50-14 bias ply tires.
ST225/75/15 tires are close to the old bias ply tires, but they are shorter and wider than original. I think ST 205/75/15 would probably fit better and still have plenty of load capacity.

yep

I am using this airway wheel with this compound.

I have a black bar from zephyr as well. Would that be the same thing?

I think it is the same, or similar at least. But I have a half of a case left, so if you want to try it, let me know.

It looks to me like the ol' Caravel has had some corrosion, probably filiform, before the first polish.

Have you tried the wool bonnet and F7 or G6 on any of it?

Alright, I PMed you. I'll try just about anything once.

I don't think this cover has ever had any attention. Is that what you mean?

The f7 and g6 were what was used in the initial polish but I have not tried them yet. I can switch gears and try it if you think it will save me time.

Great! I’ll send a bar to you soon.
Yeah that looks like filiform corrosion. A bad case of it. The front of my ‘72 had it bad but it can be smoothed out.
I’m not sure F7 or G6 on a wool compounding pad will save you time, but I think you may be more satisfied with the results. It’s worth trying on this compartment door.

Reminder Tool Boxes and Other Outdoor Storage

I have done some searches around the site for classy looking tool boxes and I have seen very little. I am sure there are some really great ideas I just have not ran across many. If you guys have seen anything nice looking I would like to see it.

It is pretty important to me to have a trailer that can hold all the bits that are required to fully use the trailer. I don't want to have to keep a tub in the tow vehicle. I want to avoid getting to the lake without the canoe paddle...
