What's a '71 cost new?

I am trying to get my 71 Tradewind insured. State Farm wants to know the new retail price in 1971. Anybody have this figure?

PS I also had it appraised by Polk Appraisals and sent this info to my insurance company too.

I contacted Tech@airstream.com and Richard Deardurff responded 3/0/05 with a retail value of my '86 Sovereign during that model year. I had also contacted the factory in late '90s for a retail price on my '77 Excella 500 in that year and they responded promptly.

I have state Farm. I always insured mine for $10000. You cant go by new cost but you can go with replacement cost of that unit. What you do is look at classifieds to get a reasonable price, even print them out. I can say that I had a tree fall on mine during a Tornado here. State Farm Paid out the value I said It was a 27 foot overland and it was in 1998. I stated less then because of inflation. Now I am set at $10000 I think I pay $117.00 a year. I also have a collector car 1941 Plymouth insured the same way. Your agent should help you , mine did. Hope this helps I noticed Ganglin has 1 to I love the 27 foot overlander.

Hi ~

Mustang presents a good view of what seems to happen! We also have state farm, and when we wanted to insure our 1963 Bambi, we wanted to insure it for what we had in it! So... they needed photos of what it looks like (it is restored) and comparison prices being charged for a similar unit. We used ebay as a basis because at the time there weren't any other Bambi's of our vintage on the market. Our state farm office had no trouble with any of it... I don't think you want to insure it for only what it cost new in 1971.... a dollar went a lot further back then! I would go with replacement cost... or if you have spent a lot of time/energy/money restoring or upgrading it, total up your receipts and send your agent a spreadsheet!

Good luck!

It will be insured for the appraised value of $10,500, but my insurance company is still asking for the retail cost in 71.

You can pick a number that's close - all they are going to use it for is the rating basis for the physical damage....

Hey Lumatic,

It is my understanding, and I could be wrong, that you should verify everything I suggest before hand, that traditional insurance companies rely on established book values, for your area, to establish compairable claim values.

As there are no book values for Vintage Airstreams or Vintage classic autos, insurers go with previous agreeded upon values.

That is, the owner of a classic vintage trailer or auto and the insurance company agree apon it's market value, reguardless of mfg year.

The insurance company charges accordingly, based on the coverage limits and conditions.

With State Farm, even if there are established book values, there are always special case scenarios that allow for value adjustments based on restorations or rarity. I have a 1984 VW Scirocco insured for a little more than twice its book value due to the fact that it's a fully restored mint show car. Agent didn't bat an eye when I gave him replacement cost figures.

Wow, if I remember correctly, the price they gave me for my '77 Excella 500 was $19,800. Things must have really changed in 6 years.
