Hello,
I recently purchased a 1978 Tradewind that has a few interesting rods sincerely mounted on the back bumper. I'm a lifetime sailor but relatively new to the land version. They don't have coax fittings, so not TV or Radio. The rods terminate seemingly with no purpose, unless it's used somehow to assist driving/backing up. I'm stumped.
They don't appear to be "original" whatever they are.
The tall one on the streetside looks like it could be an antenna mount...it looks like the previous owner extended the bumper & carried something big back there. Maybe a giant Yeti cooler!
Shari
P.S. Welcome to AirForums!

Hey, welcome to the forum. Lots of information here, some of it is even good!
The two large ones on the ends might be some kind of backing helper. I personally wonder what the PO put on this "shelf" in the back. Do a search about hanging heavy stuff off the back bumpers on an Airstream. Again, welcome to the forum and welcome to your first conspiracy theory topic.
All of the diamond plate aluminum is a custom add-on, and whoever did it was very good at it! However, the addition itself probably exceeds the amount of weight that should be carried in a stock bumper compartment.
Agree with the others, that definitely looks like custom work, and well done work. Best guess from my cheap seat is that it was either an additional brace to hold items in place, or it was some sort of support for a custom cover of some kind.
