I live in Texas, bought a 1975 Tradewind 25 in Minnesota and had the trailer weighed in Texas upon returning. Now the county clerk is saying the trailer needs to be inspected and the VIN verified by auto theft?? What is going on here? I have the title and a witnessed bill of sale. Also, doesn't a vintage Airstream classify as an antique or classic vehicle? Any help from Texas residents, I'd appreciate it! I feel like an inspection place would "reem me a new one" since these old trailers are obviously not brand new showroom quality...yet. My temporary tags run out in a week.Click image for larger version

The only things they check during inspection are brakes, tires and lights. VIN search can be done at any police station.

What was the weight of the 75? Both our trailers were well under the 4500 lbs.

Last month, while I was having my TV inspected, I confirmed that they only inspect trailers for road-worthiness: brakes, tires and lights. The inspector pointed out that these are the same things we should always check before heading out on the road.

Later the county clerk staff reminded me that a travel trailer with a gross vehicle weight less than 7,500 lbs does not need to be inspected these days.

So like Bubba L, I suspect you don’t really need to get it inspected.

Welcome to the Forums!

When I registered my '73 Globetrotter several years ago, they demanded the inspection as well, and it seemed to come as a total surprise to them that since my trailer was less than 4500 lbs (the limit for inspection at the time) that I didn't need the inspection. I had to show them in their own documentation. As mentioned above, it seems that the weight limit requiring an inspection went up dramatically (7500 lbs?) a couple of years ago, so you are likely not required to have one.

You will need more than the title to get registered. There is a form available on the TXDMV.gov site called a 130-U that you have to have filled out, and if I remember correctly, you have to have the seller's signature on that one as well.

good luck!
