Exterior Cleaning Problems Handprints

After cleaning my new* 1971 Tradewind with warm soapy water, it looks no different if not worse. I have problems with handprints down the side I am unable to remove and black scum at the front. And tips on cleaning the old number residue?

Help me choose a product to clean these. Having heard many a cautionary tale I am fearful of damaging the original finish.

Thanks in advance!

If some of the number discoloring is remaining adhesive, try WD40 and also try butter.

Thank you! It is adhesive residue on the front.

I will do it and post back my results!

Paint thinner is a good solvent, that is not at all corrosive...

Some of what you are seeing is likely the result of the clearcoat breaking down, and the subsequent oxidation, etc.....

Yes! Paint thinner (Varsol) is not corrosive and will need a little elbow grease. BTW the main ingredient in WD 40 is Stoddard solvent; AKA Varsol along with some light penetrating oils.
The hand prints are probably etched into the plastic finish from some inadvertent contaminated hands. You can try some light polishing but try it in a less obvious location first.

In a not so noticeable place, wash the area with lacquer thinner, then spray on some new clear coat. The older clear coats were lacquer based. Volatility is why EPA made Airstream stop using lacquer.
