Oh...I almost forgot that we took the Tradewind down to LA Airstream and had new axles, brakes, and centrifugal balancers put on. No shocks per their suggestion.

I will add a picture of the dinette with the cushions (8" foam) later. One trip with dinette and it works great, but the twin beds....comfortable but sleeping apart is not for us. we found ourselves envying the newer 25' rigs with the queen bed in the back and shower & toilet/sink in the middle. So I decided to reconfigure the back half of the trailer vs sleeping on the dinette for the rest s and a of our lives and having 2 unused twins, and a small revamped bath in the back.
So here is what I created the last 2 days:

1972 refurb continued

After I cleaned out the back, I cleaned, primed and painted the interior walls, ceiling, and end cap. It is amazing what a couple coats of paint will do! I cut the copper water lines just inside the back half and pulled all the plumbing out, to be replaced by pex soon.

I had also bought a converter from a 2010 AS and reconnect all the power. sure is quiet vs. the univolt.

I took the shaped wall bracket off the walls in preparation for reconstructing the walls with new material (not sure what yet)

I also found 12" of rot at the back of the rig. I cut out a section and found rust and a little metal failure at the back only. I am going to put in a 40 gallon grey water tank in the last bay after I have it welded and reinforced. I will also have them weld a solidly connected insert for our bike rack. See prior post for a picture.

Wow, Steve, great progress!

We were in much the same state as you at one point. It gets better. Have you figured out what you want for a shower/bath yet?

'72 TW continued

Somebody commented on the scraped side. Without taking off the interior walls, I just did some kabooming with a wood block and a small sledge hammer on the side rib and it took some of the sway. After the removall 220 got the paint scrapes off, painting out the trim, and a nice buff. it looks much better, but still lifetime character.

Hi Barbie,
Good to meet you and Bart at Casini. Our stay up created all the work I am doing now. I stripped the wall fittings off the removed walls and the hall caps. Working with that and a few ideas generated by talking with Vicki, I riveted the wall tracks. I had to fill in a bit. They don't like to bend much.

Closest to the front will be 2 22" wide closets on top and 3 drawers below. The middle 37" with the windows will be the toilet and sink on one side and a shower on the other. the back 60" will be a platform bed, with access from the front, and new door on the back, and at one end will be a leaning board similar to the dinette. that will hide the 110 breaker box.

Now it is 4 days of work and then back to the project. I could easily sway the # of days.

Hi Barbie,

When we were at casini you showed me a catalogue for the metal trim around the counters. What was the name of the company?
Thanks, Steve slothayer@gmail.com

Thanks Barbie! Found what I wanted at Brunner, and received the trim for the dinette table and bath counter. Now I need to laminate those and put the vaneer in the edging.

Here are some updated photos of the project. As you can see, I installed melamine walls and used the old trim as an edging. I had to cut down the drawers I made for under the old twin beds, and installed them with heavier sliders below 2 hanging closets. Still haven't decided if I will make doors for the closets or do a curtain.

The two middle window areas will be a shower on one side and the toilet and sink on the other. I ordered a new 15 gallon holding tank which is twice the capacity of the stock one.

Being that my '72 didn't have a grey water tank I ordered a 40 gallon ronco tank for the rear of the trailer. I had a welder make a space for it; strengthen the frame members; lower the skids 3 inches; and install a receiver for our bike rack. Given that the rig had a rear bath, it need a lot of work to overcome the rusty metal and make it much stronger than original. the picture shows the tank in it's frame, ready for the new floor.

The old routing of the power cord through the back storage compartment never worked for me, so I installed a outside connection.

Next is to run the drainage and pex water lines.

Here are some more updates. We are trying to get everything a least functional for a 5 day trip to the Sequoia National Park on July 4th. I really do enjoy having a project, especially one that presents some challenges. This one COUNTS!

I finished building out the 37" long x 32" wide shower over the wheel well. I have it all caulked and plan on spraying some textured paint on it....later. The drain line is under the floor and I put in a vent pipe on the back side where the water lines come up.

On the other side you can see the new black tank for the new toilet (that I will soon install plus a vent pipe that I am going to put a solar fan cover on) that will share the same size space as the shower with cabinets and a bath sink that will come...later.

I transitioned to pex for the back end. What great stuff and with slip on fittings it is sooo much easier than dealing with soldering copper. The only leaks I had when testing the system were at the copper to pex fittings, where I didn't slip on the fitting far enough. I even used the copper lines coming out of the water heater.

The drain line from the kitchen and bath sink took on some routing issues around the new black tank but it works.

I am now routing the discharge lines and valves for the 2 new tanks, and starting to plan on how to structure my platform bed that will fill the back 62" by 89" (less the curves). I am also going to put in a back hatch that will allow me to store stuff under the bed as well as a door from the hallway. More storage is good!
