My 1960 22' safari

Removed the shell today. I braces the inside with 1x6 side to side then added cross braces to that. After all the rivets were removed 7 of were able to lift and walk sideways off the chassis. We rested the shell on some yard stones using the 1 x 6 braces.

The floor was removed and much of the perimeter was rotted and disintegrated.

I'm wondering how I will get the correct arch now.

Get some 1/4" panel cheapest stuff you can find and get your buddies to help get it under the shell an trace shape now, it will change shape as it sits there.

Second option is to do some research on making and using a story stick to duplicate the curves, that is what we did on our trailer.

I was thinking about doing that.

Hey there. Don't know if you've already found an answer to your furnace location question? In my 1960 22' Safari, the furnace is under the bench seat of the dinette (on the left, as you're looking at it).

My was directly beneath the oven. It took me awhile to look close enough at it to realize it was indeed the furnace.

Did you replace yours and with what?

My 62' furnace is also under the oven. I replaced it with a new Suburban 24 K btu forced hot air unit. This unit requires lots of power from the 12 volt system to run the fan and therefore has limitations.

I would look into these units as an option. Olympian Catalytic Heater - Wave 3 - 3000 BTU

I towed the chassis to the sandblaster and then plan to make the requisite repairs.

Obviously this is the best time to add a grey water tank. I assumed I would add an appropriate tank purchased from vintage trailer supply.

What I'm unsure of is the best placement for a grey water tank.

Any tips?

Any insight on where to purchase replacement outriggers?

The welder has made some great headway. He replaced a few outriggers, a couple cross beams and the last 3' for one of the square tubes.

I attempted to replace the belly pan starting at the rear. The first attempt failed. I used the original pan as a template, but the curve proved to be trouble anyway. Any insight would be appreciated.

I feel your pain.

I just looked back on my old Caravel thread and described my first day as the "worst day of Airstream ownership". My son and I spent a total of 14 man hours trying unsuccessfully to sculpt a corner belly pan. We tossed it. See post 17 and followup of this thread. In summary, we found that we needed to remove all interferences like insulation and cut a LOT more relief points.

Hey, thanks for replying on this thread. I'd long given up on the forum as I felt info overload. I'm still trudging through the renovation, but still enjoying it.

I disassembled my door and was going to insulate it- I happened to find one of your treads which proved most helpful. Anyway...thanks again.
