door purpose?

This appears to be the same layout as ours. Ours has a patch just to the rear of the front water heater like unit (which I presume is the furnace). I see others have this little door there, what was it for? BTW I borrowed this photo from vintage airstream's archives because I couldn't find a better photo. Tomorrow I'll have to investigate if there is a door behind our patch or if it was simply removed. Does anyone have information on what heater unit was in there and/or access to plans on how to build a stock looking cover like seen here?

thanks!

That door could have been for the battery, since a spare tire was installed on the front, where the battery was originally located.

The photo is for a 62 or 63.

thanks Andy, ours too has a front spare tire mount. I'll investigate in the daylight tomorrow and share what I find.
