Sad day

Today we say goodbye to my dad, the man that not only taught me everything in the world mechanical, with us working on 50's t-birds and 60's mustangs from diapers on up, to scouting, our scoutmaster, to the love of RVing (just to name a few). 4 weeks in ICU, he goes to the lord where there are no more infections and complications. Miss you dad

Alright, today, after 6 1/2 hours we now have a full functioning Tappan Range in our trailer. This 1963 only range has been a long process (over a year and a half) and already takes up several pages of this thread, but I figured I'd document what the fixes were.

First of all, we were fortunate to come across a used but in good condition thermal control valve for the oven (picture #1). Design flaw #1, if the windows, sink, or kitchen vent leak, water that gets into the oven drains into the recessed area of this valve in the bottom of the oven and lets it rot away. The space is too narrow for any modern control valve.

This along with it's companion burner was installed (our burner was badly warped). I spent over an hour figuring out the best placement of the thermocouple. Here's the trick for proper operation (sorry I couldn't get the camera back there) have the thermocouple parallel with the bottom of the oven in bracket so the tip is in the path of the secondary gas supply but not the pilot light.

Once that was done, the oven lit. and stayed lit, even when the oven control was off.

Here's what makes this oven different. There are 3 different gas supplies to the oven, each with a unique purpose.

This is the pilot light regulator. The left line provides gas to the cooktop pilot lights, the right for the oven pilot. The screws allow you to adjust the size of the flame.

So the control valve provides gas to the secondary gas line, which must be a 1/4 in line or so. When the valve is opened by the "chef" it sends a small amount of gas down the line and lets it out below the pilot light, causing a bigger flame. This flame burns on top of the thermocouple mentioned above, once that gets hot enough, it kicks on the valve in picture #1 and that flame lights the oven burner gas as well.

Sooooooo, which one is bad?

Thankfully Reinergirl offered up the whole control assembly off her stove. I'd had this still lit problem before I gave up last year fixing this thing, so before firing this up I had swapped her oven thermostat valve out with ours.

Picture #4 - this check valve provides gas for the oven start up and for the oven burner. I discovered that it balances the gas between the valve and the burner and that mine was bad. I swapped that off Reinergirl's parts, that was sure to fix it right?

Sooooooo.. I took a profanity break. Finally a friend I was walking through everything I'd done pointed out the only item I hadn't really tested was the thermostat I'd swapped out first, that I had assumed it was bad.

I switched it back to the original one

and it worked, could turn it on, let it warm up, set the temp, and shut it off. All fittings checked. One more little project tomorrow I'm going to remove one of the burner control valves and swap it out since it is much more stiff than the other three.

Last thing, probably not this year, is sending the chrome in for replating. Wallet isn't that fat this year.

Thanks to those that offered stoves and parts to make this work. I'll be honest I feel I need a few more control panels, burners etc, so if you have a Tappan range you're not using I'm interested, even if you live in Florida or something, I'll pay to ship it out here. Amazing with all these parts how hard it is to work. The cool thing, man-oh-man does it work well when it works right.

I should also say thank you for the comments about my dad. It's been an incredibly difficult week, but trying to keep busy helping my mom and working on these projects that keep my mind busy.

I had a semi productive day. Started off by building the front and back window guards (the back one I am not sure why they had it to be honest). On went the decals, reproduction artwork courtesy of flyfshr.

Will be adding the years below the logo mostly so people in the camp grounds and gas stations will realize we didn't go.

Also started rebuilding the "hamper" which hides lots of plumbing. In its raw form you get the idea. I was fortunate to have some of its pieces as templates. Also finally cut the furnace vent through and installed it (since that too now works)

Tomorrow is an all day work party on Wally's atw to get all the window glass in, and tow lights working.

Next week I hope I can do the final prep and finally get a coat of poly on the woodwork!
