Hello Everyone, Love the forums. I just purchased a 67 Trade Wind and have to replace the Airdome vent. I'm not overly mechanical but want to learn to do these things on my own and learn all about my trade wind. I ordered the Airdome vent from VTS and should have it tomorrow. I know I have to drill out the rivets to get the old one off, but do I have to do this from the roof of the Airstream? I don't see a way to remove the screen except to rip the screen material out and I don't want to do that since they look like new screens. It looks like the screen frame is riveted to the side so my option is to rip out the screen and remove the brackets or do it from the top. Is there a trick to remove the screens or are they riveted in place. If they are riveted, that seems kind of an odd way to put them up. That's why I'm asking.

It definitely seems like I will need to drill out the rivets from the top. Just waiting on a new fancy ladder I ordered from lowes to get up on the roof. Lol. I can't post pics using this darn iPad or I don't know how to if you can. It will be my first fix so looking forward to many more fixes after this one.

On my 1966 tradewind you remove both knobs on the cranks. There is a hole in the side of the crank that you push a small screwdriver into. This push's down a ball on the shaft that is holding the crank handle. Then while pushing the ball in, you pull the crank handle downwards.
Now the screen will be able to be pulled downwards out of the vent frame.
Now you will have access to the mechanism on each side that lifts and lowers the vent cover. I will look for my pictures to see if I can add those for you.

Here is a picture of a removed vent. Notice the mounting hole on the crank or lifting mechanism. The bracket on the frame of the window is a Y type looking bracket. You place a small screw driver between the Y and the lifting mechanism and spread the Y just a little bit. You will be able to pull the lifting mechanism away from the Y bracket.
