Possible purchase

Hello! A 1962 tradewind land yacht was listed in my area for $3000. I plan to check it out ASAP but am wondering if anyone has any thoughts or tips before I do so? I live in FL and most traveling will probably stay on the east side of the USA. I tried uploading some photos so hopefully you can see. Any insight is appreciated!

Welcome to the Forums!

That trailer looks, and sounds like a "field find" that is going to require a complete rebuild. Don't let the new paint in the interior fool you. No way of knowing without doing a compelte inspection. Go to the Portal tab and download the Trailer Inspector's checklist for guidance. There is also a utility to help you find volunteer inspectors, who might be able to help you to thoroughly evaluate the trailer.

As to the price, well, I am sure there are folks out there who will pay $3000 for it. I figure it is worth around $2000, but if it is as neglected as I presume it is, then what you pay for it is just the downpayment on the additional thousands of dollars that you will spend rebuilding everything, so it doesn't matter all that much.

If you think you are going to buy this trailer and be camping by the end of the summer, then I would say keep looking, and expect to pay around $12k.

good luck!

$3000 sounds cheap for a 62, especially if it is ready for the road. No title could be a problem and is probably the reason for the low price. I would make sure it is a legit deal. If this trailer was near the coast in Florida make sure the frame is not rusted out by the salt air.

I bought my '73 trailer near Destin, and had to replace the rear couple of feet of frame, and do a lot of repair work to it.

And I forgot to mention, the missing title is no trivial situation. If it was easy to get a replacemant, the current owner probably would have gotten one by now. It may not be a legit deal (ie., the guy selling it doesn't actually own it), but even if it is, it is going to be a hassle to title it.

good luck!

The hassle factor varies state to state. Here in NM you have to file an affidavit, post a bond while a government search is done for any liens and to see if it is stolen, and wait while a search is done. I hear in Vermont getting a title is simpler and you don't have to be a state resident. It also may be possible in 1962 in the state where this trailer was registered a title was not required. Was there ever a title? If the title was lost the owner can file for a duplicate title.
