Early TradeWind Registry

Hi everyone....just wanted to drop in and tell you I am the new owner of a 1959 trade wind, I am moving it tomorrow to have new tires put on....it apparently has solid wheel and electric brakes and so I am going to get all of that inspected/repaired.

I had read several times about a registry for 1959 and 1960 tradewinds, can some one post a link to it so I can see,

my unit was made in Ohio and as far as I can tell it was the 159th on made
serial 249159

thanks to all for your helpful insight /advice during all of this

Looks great

Congratulations mercury7! It does looks like it has a great skin. The Tradewind registry guru would be Brad (flyfshr). I'm not aware that he has it posted on the web, but I could be wrong. I would love to see it too. He will probably que in on this thread. Good luck on towing it out. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the science exhibit when it is completed.

thanks, yeah I hope the registry is public....it would be cool to see where all our oldies are, btw I am right are'nt I about being number 159....it threw me at first since it's a 59 and the last two digits were 59.

I will be working on the layout of the science center soon.......I just need to make the most of the space I have.

Yes, I think you are. Yours should be the 159th Tradewind off the line. My S/N is 240310T and also an Ohio. T is for the twin bed layout. There is a science to interpreting these old serial numbers. Brad has some interesting observations, for instance, last I heard he hadn't found any two sequential S/Ns coming from the same factory. I think it's a facinating part of Airstream history.

Mercury7 -

Hello from your trailer's older sibling, #114 in Ohio in 1959. Best of luck with your new acquisition.

OK, stop yer yammering. Here I am.

No, I haven't posted the registry because of it having email addresses of the owners and I don't want to post without the owners' permission. For all my early TradeWind friends, I could remove the email addresses and send it to you. Drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send it out. I probably have your email address anyway but just in case.

As for the decoding of your serial number, let me get out my secret decoder ring. Now let's see, what have we got? 24 is for the length - making it a TradeWind, 9 is for the year of manufacture and 159 is the production number off the Ohio plant assembly line. Mercury7, you were right about the 159. Keep us posted on your progress. We're all very interested in what happens to our TradeWind's siblings.

Brad

Thanks Brad, for respecting everyone's privacy. Privacy has become so easily lost these days with advancing technology. Have you found any sequential S/Ns from the same factory yet?

btw brad...not sure of the mechanical condition of them but was really happy to see it had electric brakes, all that stuff is scheduled for inspection/repair today, also got a prodigy brake controller that should arrive today via fedex so I won't be taking any chances getting her home. I am waiting to see how she tows and the amount of drop with my ridgeline before deciding on sway or weight distribution system.

the lights and lenses were shot and so I will have to get replacements, I saw some lcd lenses pretty cheap and inland rv that might work good temporarily since I am going to be needing the whole assembly and not just the lenses.

Mine has a 2" ball. Not positive they all did but would imagine they should. No sequential numbers yet. Closest is Ohio made 310 and 312. We'll get one, I have hope.

Mecury, mine also has a 2" ball. I think yours will work.
Brad, I'm on the hunt for 309 and 311. They could be my factory siblings!

The time has finally arrived! We pulled the ole' gal out of the barn and are starting the renovation. Her serial number is 249141. I am sure I will have a million questions, soon. Thanks in advance.

Congratulations Mary. Glad you've finally getting her (or him) home. Ask your questions, there's a number of us early TradeWind owners here to help. I've had your name on my registry list for some time and it is good to finally be able to list you with the Ohio built trailers. Now a bit more information please. Does it have a double or twin beds? Couch or dinette? Also be great to see some pictures. Hint...hint.

'She' has twin beds. I believe it had a couch, but it is missing. She has a window to the right of the door. The second owner removed the couch¿¿ and added chairs and a table to play cards. She never left his property. Everything else is original. Some delaminating and the interior walls have been painted. We are the third owner....bought her sometime ago and just did not know what to do.... so much work! She has a Princess stove and a Dometic frig. Both work, but how well??? Hubby removed all the windows and they are now being repaired, new glass or whatever??? She had a toilet but when I visited yesterday it is missing??? I don't know where it went, but I see lots of new plumbing. I am the decorator and the geek! Hubby is the hmmmmmmmmm... fixer-upper! The indoor-outdoor carpet is also gone. Sitting on the floor was a heat gun, I think he is removing the tile! Ö Ö Ö I took a few pictures and will post them when I figure out how to do it!

Brand New Airstream owner (we're new owners, it's not a new airstream)

Hello All,

About 8 hours ago, we brought home our very first AS - a '64 Tradewind Double named Felix ( Felix was a PO, I thought it was only fitting to carry on his name).

Serial number is listed as S0024410191 (that's the VIN number off the title. It's too dark to go outside and read the plate and verify).

The interior can use a little TLC, some delaminating, broken floor trim, ugly carpet and a few cracks in the Zolatone. BUT - the body is in great shape, the floor is in great shape and as long as the body, frame, floor and mechanicals are all good, the rest is simply cosmetic, right? At least that's what my husband and I said as we tried to rationalize this purchase......

I'm sure I'll be asking a ton of questions over the next several months, so please be patient!

But Honey, the important stuff is in GREAT shape!

Dnrtheil, welcome. It sounds like you've got some work ahead, but maybe nothing as indepth as an off frame restoration. I'm sure you've figured out there is plenty of information here to help.

Rationalization is a great coping mechanism, isn't it?

Archives

I was surfing the Vintage Airstream Archives 2 weeks ago and discovered a Tradewind that was very similar to ours. Halfway through the different views of it I was surprised to realize that it IS OURS. the photos were posted from the eBay listing that we bought it through. I have not discovered how to use the 'tool' to create the link here but if you are interested it is under '66 Tradewind #SO246012'
