Belly pan and interior skins off !

Hey all,

Been in gentle destructo mode for about a week, (gentle as I can be! ) readying "Carlotta" for her shell off. grinding bolts and last bit of trim on interior wall (c or u channel....) any suggestions when not using a gantry ? and setting her down after frame is out from underneath (tying her down to grass...)

Thanks for any suggestions

Hi KZ and welcome to Air Forums and the vintage Airstream hobby. How quickly our trailers come apart, and how slowly they go back together. But it is a very fun project.

I have read about folks using jacks and timbers to lift it off the frame. I am not sure the exact process, but they lift houses off foundations and onto trucks when the house is being moved. The shell doesn't weigh all that much stripped down like yours is. Maybe you can lift a corner by hand, slide a 4x4 under it, and so forth. Make sure you tie the shell down securely against the strongest winter winds so the shell won't be rolled up into a ball.

Gantries are pretty easy and cheap to make. Two of them and lifting from the vent holes may be beneficial. And the gantries may be helpful with any frame work you plan on doing. Your neighbors will think you are building a gallows!

You will have to start a "full monte" tread so we can follow you along on your project.

Looks like you are quite a ways along.
Keep us posted with pictures. I saw on another thread someone had 2X4 between the frame and shell. Then they had a strap that went from one end of the board over the shell to the other end of the board. They had the board/strap on front and back and a large come along from the straps above to an A frame. It looked like it just lifted up and they pulled the frame out and set it right back down on the ground.
