Water heater cover

Brad,
It's not chrome, the heater came minus a cover so I made one out of some sheet aluminum I had on hand. Just did a quick polish, then bent it on my small pan brake.
The aluminum vent grate was on the shelf at a local RV parts store.

Hi Brad....

My partner ans I picked up our 1959 Tradewind on Friday. Ever since we found her the Sunday before I have been researching info, and found your thread, and have been waiting until she was in our possesion to join and post.

We are temporaily calling her our "Vintage Vixen" until she reveals her true name to us. Stats are as follows

DRUMROLL.....
California born 9-7-1958 approved for sale DoH No. 2073
Serial # 24D-0115 Yes I said that right...I believe she is your trailers sibling! (958)
Sold and Serviced at Berts Trailer Sales Michigan City , Indiana
Red Numbers 13967

We were told we are the "second Owner"
She was titled in Illinois in 1999 by Tony Shepherd...who was given the title by his mom, who was the original owner. A friend of his facilitated the sale to us.... It had been in his possesion for a few years, under a tree, hoping to someday restore her...

We think they forgot to winterize it...and the copper piping split(as we discovered yesterday when checking the lines) and they left it to the squirrel and mice...until some cash was needed....Enter Airstream Virgins (Mark and I) with a dream and some cold hard cash!

A few specs...
She has the double windows in front of the door...so that means couch I think...the only thing in the front is a cabinet..that has a fold out table(3sections) and the fresh water tank and pressure motor in it.

Kitchen is intact with the exception of the fridge, Brown princess stove and all burners and knobs and grates are present. The propane wall heater is intact also. Propane lamp and all overhead lights are there, vents are all present and all windows, screens and cranks also. One shade on the kitchen light has a broken corner, but the one over the wardrobe window and the bathroom are unbroken.

All cabinetry and hardware are unbroken and in working order, except one drawer handle is broken. We have the double bed, with a bunk over the top, and the cabinets and wardrobe opposit of them.

The bathroom is missing the toilet, but the sink and vanity, tub, shower and fixtures are there. With one BIG BONUS. The bathroom has the upgraded tankless water heater.

All the interior walls are original and unscarred ( although very dirty), except one small puncture where it apprears a back corner of a fridge hit.

The front door is original, and we have the door handle(now working thank to Mark) It does have the broken handle like most, but we have the piece and will repair that.

The Underbelly has a few scars and cuts...they will be repaired as we go. We have the original propane tanks, Battery box up front, Sway bars and hitch that goes with (I think they were an add on also) Some of the side lights are missing, but wiring is there. Original leaf springs, and by condition, I am going to bet wheels also.

I think thats it for now...and I promise to post pics as soon s I figure out how!

Kim!!! That's a great story and I'm very excited she's one up from mine. Siblings indeed. I'll try to be patient until pictures arrive. Please start a new thread on your discovery so you can add to it when you make changes, renovations and discoveries.

Brad

Is there any way to confirm in the old directories the "red numbers"? It would help me see if the story I've been told is accurate

And I will start a thread.....oh boy!

Now I'm really confused. Yours is the first California built Airstream of our era that has a model name badge. Everyone I've seen prior to yours that had that badge was an Ohio built trailer. Maybe it was added later by a prior owner or possibly the dealer since this was a midwestern bought unit. Love these little tidbits of curiosity.

As for the red numbers, the ones on your trailer were not issued by the WBCCI office as they're italicized and the ones issued were not. There may be a ghost image on the metal under these red ones. It could also be the original number was a three or four digit number as they were shorter back then. Maybe your original number was 396 and the two outside numbers were added later since that number may have been available. Look closely for a ghost of a number.

There is a thread on here where someone has some of the old directories and is kind enough to look up the numbers for you. Look around and you should find it.

Looking forward to your thread. Please let me know when you start it.

ghost numbers

Brad

I checked...I do have ghost numbers, but they are the same sequence. they also have a rectangular ghost image of a Wally Byam CARAVAN under them. The ghost numbers are of a straighter font.

On the badges, I took a closer look last night, and the California DoH badge and the tradewind badge are attached with the same rivets, but they are different then the Serial plates ones....
The mystery continues!

I think I just joined the club. Just picked up a 59' Tradewind 24D0294 from the original owners. She is pretty straight and towed well through the bay area traffic today. It was sitting under a rusty overpass and some of that transferred to the skin. Lets hope that comes out. Looks like the PO extended the bumper for a box and switched out the tongue jack and flipped the axle under the springs. Other than that its all there. Pretty excited to get busy on it in my spare time :-)

Congrats Doug. Those last numbers mean yours was the 106th TradeWind off the CA assembly line and came off the line in August of 1958. We're only a few numbers apart so I'll bet they're not that much different other than you have the double bed and mine has twins. Do you have a couch up front or the booth?

Hi Brad, My trade wind has the couch up front. The back folds down and there's a new fresh water tank in there. I must read this whole thread before i go much further. Doug.

Brad,

It looks like mine says 659 on the same plate. Does this mean mine is June of 59?

Thanks Vinnie

I got a 59 Trade Wind as a project. The model tag is my profile pic as I'm posting from a phone and unable or I just don't know how to upload photos. She's in rough shape but as it's for my personal enjoyment and not a resell I have time.

Reviving An Old Thread

Hello vintage TradeWind owners - I've been reviewing this old thread and wanted to see who still has their TradeWind and who's still active on the Forums. Please post a response and if you're a new owner of a '59 or 60 TradeWind, please say hello.
