In regard to a "restoration manual" for our Vintage coaches, none exists. What we do have is the minimal owners' manuals that began with the 1964
models - - not always greatly infomrative, but at least a source of information. If you don't have an owners' manual for your coach, you can get a copy of one using the infomration from the Vintage Airstream Club website that is quoted below:
Q: I need an owners and service manual for my Airstream. Where can I get one?
A: The first owners manuals were published in 1964. Prior to that, the owner received a brown envelope containing parts lists and other helpful information on the accessories in his trailer. The VAC has started making these available in the Members Archive section. A service manual with instructions for performing service operations did not exist until 1972.
You can get photocopies of owners manual (1964+) and service manuals (1972-1986) from:

Prices are about $33 and $70 respectively. After 1986 the Owners Manuals included available service information.
A general reference guide such as Bob Lifingston's RV Maintenance and Repair Manual
has often been suggested as a resource for restoration.
In regard to testing the LP operated appliances, I would urge you to have a qualified RV LP technician inspect and evaluate those appliances. The charge is usually modest, but it will give you a baseline condition analysis of the LP system - - it is one of the first things that I had done after purchasing both of my coaches.
In regard to the electrical outlet on the side of the coach, its function relates to its actual position. If it is on the lower body, it was a weatherproof outlet for use as a power source for electric devices when camped with hookups. If it is on the upper body, it may have been a single-outlet porch light fixture - - it was an option during at least part of the 1960s as my Overlander still has its porch light - - the outlet and the fixture are in the photos below:
In regard to the "porch light" that is often referred to as a "scare light", the bulbs are known to run hot and it is not uncommon to find a lense that is deformed or partially melted. Andy of Inland RV has posted to a thread here on the Forums regarding the most compatible bulb for this particular fixture. The lenses as well as the entire fixture are readily available from Airstream dealers as well as some truck supply outlets.
