1968 Makeup Mirror Unit

Is the makeup mirror supposed to have any covers over the lamps? The unit I have has no covers. Attached is a picture of a similar mirror that I pulled off Vintage Airstream and it doesn't have any covers either.

My mirror seems to have a four way switch as well, but three positions turn all four lamps on. Assuming the switch isn't working properly, was the pattern 1 lamp, 3 lamps, 4 lamps, like the square overhead lights? Seems odd for a makeup mirror. Wouldn't you want them all on, or not at all?

I received one reply off-list, and it appears that no covers were ever placed on the lights. It wouldn't allow access to the switch knob and wouldn't be logical anyway.

It turns out that the reason all the lights were coming on no matter the position of the switch is that the four sockets each have two terminals, with two filament 1176 lamps in three and a single filament 1156 in the fourth. The 1156 was connecting the circuit at all times, except when the switch was "off."
