1964 24 foot Tradewind- rough. Need advice.
So i bought the above for two hundred and it is rough. Floors are soft. Skyvents are missing for a few years... Most exterior panels have some damage, interior has been heat/water damaged, moldy. The enamel sink has a chip. Some of the windows are busted. Some of the window frames are bent at the top. Some big dents on the roof from kids walking on it.
So i'm thinking... Don't wanna use the 's' word but what are my other options. Thought about a storage shed. Will probably part it out and start a marketplace thread. It's just sad to see an AS in such injured condition.
Huge plot of land overhere, title in hand, and a bb ridden AS. What now?

That is really sad. The Tradewind is such a great Airstream. I need a water tank cap. Some dummy lost mine. I will feel forever inadequate until I replace it.
I guess that I would part it out and then recycle the rest. I would hate to have to just look at it injured that way. I wish I had a better idea.

Dan--if you're talking about the exterior cap about halfway up and halfway over on the curbside--it's missing. I'm kind of getting a good feeling about about parting it out because not only would I make a few bucks--I'd also furnish some AS lovers with something they need. A damaged carcass isn't something i really want to keep around though--so considering scrap the body and redeck the trailer and use it as a titled utility trailer... The idea of scrapping just hurts though. Dang sensibilities and AS love.

Sounds like a good plan to me. With so many vintage Airstreams still intact and being saved, you will be able to make a few Airstreams and their owners quite happy. I like the idea of redecking the chasis. You could go to Airstream rallys and just set up a tent on the new deck.

The shell is stiff enough to carry the frame along with it - the OEM frame is built just for supporting the plywood floor using the hitch and axle brackets (no lie) so unless you're just reusing the hitch A-frame where the SN's are stamped and weld on a new frame to grandfather in a new trailer on an old registration its kind of a lose-lose option. Really, they say not even a bicycle rack or spare tire on the back of an Airstream for a reason... You'll see if you do open it up.
PS: Scrap aluminum sheet here in MN is going for about 45¢ a pound, about half of its peak price not too long ago. Copper is also down ($2.50/#) though I got your purchase price from the water lines & valves pulled from my '73 a couple of years back. Shop hard for a yard to purchase your scrap, prices given vary hugely!

Thanks wabbiteer. Just weighing options at the moment. I read up on dent renoval techniques and am gonna have another look see at the body when i tow it to the lot... If anything, it'll be something to practice on. I really like the little trailer. Probably grow even more fond of it once i get elbow deep. We shall see

Dan--tent on the deck is funny. I'd do it too.
One thing i will say about this stream is that it has a really nice belly pan. It's freakin' flawless. How it survived so well--i haven't a clue.
I will pass on a heads up if i initiate a 'marketplace' thread.

NOLA Geoff I wish you the best with the Tradewind. I am somewhat hoping it is salvageable and gets a new life, but understand it would be tons of work an dmay not be worth the hassle. The Tradewinds are super cool. Plus at an acquisition price of $200 at least you have options. Best of luck with however you choose to proceed.

Spent the day gutting. Not attempting to save much interior wise. Keeping the gauchos for the time being till i can take good measurements for the future. Trying to save it...
