A New Beginning with Another Ride on a Ferry

Last Thursday I said a bunch of goodbyes—didn’t lose it until the last one late in the day. Pam and I had moved onto our sailboat nearly 24 years ago in Blaine and there are a lot of friends there.

Friday, Brissy and I hooked up Island Girl and made the short trip to Deception Pass State Park. Haven’t camped there since sometime in the early 80’s when I did it by bicycle and it is still just as stunning. The bridges were in part a Civilian Conservation Corps work project during the Depression.
Of course it was windy and rainy just as soon as we found our campsite, but that was OK.

On Sunday while waiting for the Port Townsend ferry one of the crewmembers asked about the trailer. That worked out well as we were first on the ferry with Bris looking out to make sure nobody got too close.

We were headed for a little county campground just south of Port Townsend called Oak Bay where I’ll be the host for the season. The campground was also a CCC project during the Depression. There are also a few campsites on the spit in the background in that one picture. Lots of birds, a view of Mt. Ranier on a clear day and a pretty fantastic place for my kayak.

The flamingos have landed and the anchor is down, so we’re all set. I’ll be here all season but should be able to get away to the Olympic Mountains a few times. Feel good about it and think it should help me as I continue through the grieving process and start to put my life back together again. Things are OK. Hopefully we’ll see a few Airstreams in here this summer.

cheers,
steve

What a beautiful place to spend the summer. Maybe the change will do you good. Wish it wasn't so far away or we'd come up and see you. I have a soft spot for white cats too.

Maybe I can show up at your cg, Steve! Dying to meet you and the Briss now. Sometimes fresh surroundings can really help. Maybe Pink and I can show up at the same time, although I realize that's not a prospect for the faint of heart...

Thanks! Should be just about the right summer for me.

You and Pink can come up anytime, zlee! I just checked tonight and I don't think there is a site you can't back into.

cheers,
steve

Absolutely not. It is a big deal. I know that I will continue to embarass myself backing up, only when there is a crowd handy.

Haha! I don't mind, it gives me something to be humble about, because you know, there's so little, otherwise...

It is great to hear from you. Glad to know you are in a beautiful place to spend the summer. You are very close (as a crow flies) to my uncle in Everett. Wish we could pop up there to see the view. Your photos are very inviting. Alas with gas at $4. here in NC. I do not think that 2783 miles are in the budget for this year. I hope you are able to do a few small projects on your trailer and spend some time assisting folks who are visiting the campground. We will look forward to future updates. You have been an inspiration to many of us. May our thoughts and prayers continue to support you.
Peace

Looks like a beautiful place, Steve! I hope your summer is peaceful and healing, and full of new friends.

We've been wanting to do more camping in Washington; now we know of a great place to go. It would be nice to meet you, and Brissy!

sound like s good plan

Hi Steve

thanks for the update and photos. This looks like a good place to be for awhile.
Love the lil' anchor. I think we may need one for our land yacht. Espesially with all the coastal camping we do.

till then

Steve - we are heading to Fort Worden latter part of May, if we get the resealing done. Will let you know if we do. There should be a couple of us at least, just in the planning stage at the moment. Fort Worden is a spousal favorite.

Steve I have been reading this thread for a couple of weeks now and have enjoyed it immensly. I too am a care giver for my 24 year old son who has Down Syndrome. I know how it is sometimes. If you are having trouble finding some support services PM me. My wife is very knowledgable about what is available. Anyway keep going on your quest to finish your AS. I know it's a labor of love.

I am coming up there after my first summer session. Will you be up there for the whole summer? I am so there. I stayed on Orcas island and it was lovely. The ferry ride was so cool, I would love to do it with my trailer. Will work out the mileage and start collecting aluminum cans for gas money!!!! Who is with me???
Smiles,
Pink

Let me know your dates, Pink. We could probably raise a whole lot of hell caravanning together...
