My new old Airstream

Hello all!
I recently purchased my first Airstream and will be picking it up in a month from now. It is a 58 Overlander 26'. A couple of issues I have up front. It has a HUGE swamp cooler on the roof. Anyone have any advice on how to remove something that big? My other issue is that someone actually painted the roof white (why oh why?!). Is there any particular type of paint stripper I should use?

you can safely get up on top only with a scaffold of some sort. Here's an example:

if you want to begin understanding painted tops, look at threads "painting Airstream red" and "painting the top of...Airstream"

Congratulations!!! I can't help you with the swamp cooler, but the white painted roof was done in an effort to keep the trailer cooler. Actually, the new trailers have white roofs...

Striping it can be done the same way as stripping clearcoat, Aircraft Stripper, BIX, CitriStrip all work...some more agressively than others. Regardless, remove all the "plastic bits" as the stripper will melt the plastic too. You can do a search here to find all kinds of methods and some that are more "green".

Plastic? On a '58? Not unless someone has replaced original items with newer stuff like the vent covers or sewer vent pipes. Can't think of anything else that could be plastic.

Plastic, plastic everywhere, and not a bit to melt ...

How about the teardrop side marker light lens?

You're right Fred but I hope there's not any on the roof. Seems like a strange place for a side marker light.

More plastic & photo magic

Thinking harder (but still slowly), there's more plastic in the rear tail light lens and in the large forward fixed side windows, which are made of plexiglass, and perhaps in some of the smalller front, rear and side operable windows, which also may be made of plexiglass. Drip, drip, drip.

Welcome to the forums, what a great looking trailer you have. Looks like they did a lot of desert camping with that AC unit. Looking forward to more pics.

Thank you Roger for cleaning up my thread. I appreciate it! So....about that swamp cooler. Does anyone have any idea how much something like that weighs?

I haven't personally seen a swamp cooler but would imagine it to weigh close to an early AC. It will take a minimum of two strong guys to take it down in one piece. Now, if you don't want it anymore, a good toss to the ground should be in order.
