Marker lights on top?

Why do some older Airstreams have marker lights on top and some don't ? My '61 Overlander does not. Was it an option or difference between models?

Some of it was an option, and some was Federal regulation.
At one point we speculated it was included on International models, but was optional on the other models. I've seen more International models with the three lights on the center panel than I have on the base models.

Just curious. Mine does not have them. I wish it did. I'm not putting any extra holes in for that.

My '60 did not have them either - however when I removed all the interior panels I discovered running light wires nicely coiled up about a foot above the front and back windows.
