Is this an Overlander?

26’ , single axle, 5 panels.

Vin says TD4-120-K

I’m not seeing overlanders with 5 panels and single axle. I know it was sometimes an option

I’ve read all the identification guides and only vin I see that starts with TD is for a spaceliner which is 22’ and Bambi which is ‘16.

Could this be pre ‘59? Tandem Cruiser?

What do you think?

Welcome to the Forums!

This one is a bit hard to place, both on appearance, and in terms of trying to decode your numbers. I wonder if there haven't been changes, like a door replacement, that make guessing harder.

You can try hunting down its match on https://vintageairstream.com/photo-archives/

Good luck!

It looks very much like a 1960 trade wind but the door looks like 65 - 69 and the lower window (which would have been next to the door) is missing or replaced with aluminum (lots of exterior skin work)

1960 Tradewinds and Safari's had a TD number but:

The panel config on the rear is a telltale of 65: https://vintageairstream.com/photo-a...-tradewind-24/ but the single axle is puzzling.

Keep us posted as you explore

Thanks so much for responding. I definitely thought tradewind at first glance and thought maybe TD was for twin, double and 4 was for 24’ like the trade winds but I keep measuring it and it really is 26’ which means it has to be an overlander right?

Curious what year is it titled as? As Janet pointed out a lot of alterations and I can't distinguish any emblems by the door.

For comparison here is my 58 Overlander (57 interior layout, 58 shell 7 panel, built Sept 57). The only exterior change I've made, other than lights, is removal of the refrigerator louver panel as I converted to all electric.

Beautiful! Do you know if yours is a torsion axle?
When I look at the airstream website document archives I see an ad that those were introduced in 60 but in the Ad they mention they have been experimenting with them for 5 years, so I’m wondering if a 58 or 59 might have that?

Mine does not have the torsion bar. It's leaf springs and beam axle.

RE: Is this an Overlander?

Greetings OnWheels! Welcome to the Forums and the world of Vintage Airstreams.

Your trailer certainly raises many questions in its model identification. It is not an entirely unfamiliar circumstance within the Vintage Airstream community as the 1950s and 1960s were a time when Airstream seemed to nearly encourage customers to special order trailers to meet their desires so it is not uncommon to find unusual features not mentioned in literature of found on other similar models. The original owners of my 1964 Overlander Land Yach International ordered it with hydraulic drum brakes because they already had their 1957 Mercury outfitted to tow a trailer with hydraulic brakes. They later converted the trailer to electric drum brakes when they purchased a new 1967 Mercury, but some of the hydraulic components were still on the trailer when I purchased it in 1995.

The size certainly says Overlander, and the single axle does not necessarily preclude that. I have friends who have a 1960 Overlander that was purchased new by his grandparents and it is a single axle. I do not know whether there was any difference in the serial number because it was a single axle.

The one unusual feature that I noted in your phots is the placement of the porch light fixture base. It is located above the jalousie window while the more typical location is near the bedroom window. I am attaching a photo of the porch fixture attached to the side of my 1964 Overlander Land Yacht International.

Good luck with your investigation!

Wow thank you so much everyone!

So it seems like…1964 Overlander

Based on exterior and interior measurements it has to be an overlander.

Based on torque axle it is most likely post 1960

Based on 5 panel (if this was not redone) it is most likely post 1964

When I look at 64 they have the same window patterns with the only anomaly being the lower jalousie window by the door which was probably damaged and replaced by a solid panel.

This leaves the single axle which I’m assuming was a custom request then which they did do.

For the serial code TD4-120-K I’m wondering if TD referred to the bed set up..4 referred to ‘64 …not sure about the rest
🤔

If hitch to bumper is 26' it is an Overlander. Starting in 1961 dual axles were standard on Overlanders. 1960 and prior the single axle was standard with a dual axle being an option at least in 1960, I'm not sure prior to that.

Here are some pics of a single-axle 1961 Overlander. https://vintageairstream.com/photo-a...erlander-26-2/
They are reminiscent of your rig with some interesting differences:

lower jalousie window
door construction
Rear panels.

The scare light placement is however correct on both yours and this one.

These also have TD serial numbers

I might look hard and 1960 and a few years later to find your ultimate answer

Here's some help decoding serial numbers: https://www.airstream.com/wp-content...2020-06-16.pdf

So I’ve been scouring the forums looking for any other pics of stamps on the tongue that look like mine and so far I have seen two posts with similar codes…

One was from someone’s ‘68 sovereign ( LD8 817 KD) and another was from someone’s ‘66 Safari( FD6 230 K)

https://www.airforums.com/forums/f36...ion-85443.html

https://www.airforums.com/forums/f19...on-181328.html

Since mine is
TD4 -120-K I’m assuming that third digit is the year like with the other two. So a ‘64 which would match that was the first year of 5 panel. The ‘65 I saw have the tail lights on raised bevels and ‘64 did not which matches mine.

Wondering what those other numbers could mean. D for double? Can’t imagine what the K is as all three codes end with it. Hmmm
