Cell phone coverage and Airstreams..general Q

Does the aluminum shell of an Airstream interrupt reception at all?

Just daydreaming of a mobile office/home

Surprised no one has given you any input so far. We have never experienced serious service issues on our cell phone inside the Airstream. I suppose it could be a problem if the signal in the area is weak to begin with, but we have not had an issue. We use Verizon service and also use a Verizon MiFi device for internet connections inside the Bambi with no probelms.

Probably, but enough signal leaks through the windows and doors that it's not very noticeable. (The screens in our trailer are fiberglass.)

An outside antenna will always help.

Should of posted in the electronics section for more replies. Aluminum is not good for cell reception. Think faraday cage. A signal booster and external antenna are a good bet.

But it can be a porous faraday cage, we've not had problems with pano windows both ends and more on the sides and top.

I've never noticed any loss of signal or signal deterioration with either our iPhones or routers. I also have a wireless rear view camera that transmits to my iPhone in my truck cab and at distances up to 75' from the camera.

I have installed a Wilson Signal Booster with External Antennta and my reception goes from 4 bars to 5 bars instantly. The cradle is inside the camper, whilst the antenna is mounted securely to the roof with aircraft adhesive.

I’ve been thinking of adding a Wilson cell booster. Which antenna did you install? Were you concern about a ground plane for the antenna? I think the magnetic roof mount antenna used in cars allows the car roof to be the ground plane.

Jim,

Here's the link:

This setup includes everything... I had the antenna mounted on top of the trailer, and I don't know how that affects the ground plane since it's aluminum, but I've been using one since 2012 for high speed internet and have yet to find somewhere that it doesn't work well.
