63 Overlander project ???

Well I had asked a guy if he would be willing to sell this Overlander. I had seen it while I was riding my bike. After a few months of him thinking about it we struck a deal. Got it home and there were more things wrong than I expected but it's an Airstream and it's about 60% unmolested so it's a good start. Missing the Fridge cabinet and the toilet pedestal/tank. Half painted inside of course and cabinets have quite a bit of delamination but at least they are there for templates..

Day 1 reno.
Pulled full size toilet out...... subfloor over original floor in the whole trailer. Pulled barroom cabinet. Lots of rot... shower floor seems to be solid but can see rot behind it so it's got to come out.

Previous owner had turned streetside bed into a counter top with a home 24 gallon hot water heater inside the cabinet

Rot also around sill plate front door and front corners below windows.

Electrical works. AC even kicked on..... 😊😊😊😊. I only let it run for a second, until someone can look at it and service it. Original hot water heater gone of course and fresh water holding tank gone. Plan is to put the street side bed back to simi original and hide fresh water tank behind it and put a new hot water tank back in place. Re plumb the whole thing. Black tank of course not sure about a Grey tank yet.

Plan for a grey tank. Easier to do it now then regret not doing it later.

A trailer that old in your part of the country, I'd expect rot pretty much everywhere.

Ah, so that's what floor rot looks like. What a project you've taken on!

They are gone lol...took them off yesterday. Old ones were in the trailer with the lens. They had wired the square ones as substitutes. I will have to to check the stock wires and harness to figure out why the discarded them.

I think the only "rule of thumb" would be frame related (as in: what will the frame hold and/or what modifications are you willing or able to make). Your coach looks to be longish? 28-31'?
On my '78 Avion 28', it has 65/30/40 f/g/b, but the frame is built like a shick brit house compared to my '77 Airstream 31' at 50/16/20. These two trailers have the tanks below the floor in between the frame rails. On my '64 Silverstreak, everything was above the floor, 25 gal fresh and maybe 20 gal black, no grey tank.

There are many threads related to the addition of a grey water tank but until you have direct access to your frame, it'll be hard to determine the size and optimal placement.

looks like asbestos floor tiles. Be aware of their danger to your health..
My trailer had minimal floor rot and was a Southern Overlander most of the past 30 years, but it had been sealed well at some point which made a difference. Good luck to you on your restore.

No rule of thumb. Keep in mind that water weighs 8 1/3 pounds per gallon.

We have had good results with 28g Fresh --under a dinette seat forward, 12g black (original size) and 30g grey.

Tank sizes

I have original fresh tank (30 gal I think)
Original black tank (size unknown)
New gray tank is 30 gallons since that size fit comfortably in the space available without hanging low enough to be a liability. It was custom made so I was free to choose any size I wanted.

Rear bath removed, wall panels, floor from 3 cross member back. Like the shine on the walls.... insulation was in good shape. Part of the rear cross member is in bad shape and needs replaced. Might do both of the rear crossmembers depending on gray water tank. Wonder why they did not have a street side outrigger when the black water tank was right above that area?

I added one, a short piece of angle iron. Make sure and taper the end or it will poke thru the belly wrap...like mine did!

I've been using 2 x 4" by .125 thick tube for replacement cross members. It works great on either side of a gray tank install.

That is about .82 lighter per foot if I figured that correct. So a little over 13oz per foot. I come Up with about 4.1 pounds on 5 feet. My measurements are around 58" for the crossmember.

Why is the font of the chassis box steel and then it turns into channel...... I guess that's where/why the rear sag comes from...
