Here is a pic of the 62 Overlander we picked up in Colorado last weekend. This weekend we start the restoration.

Looks like a great find! That's an interesting window layout, with the small Jalousie window up front and I'm assuming windows for bunks? What's the layout?

yes, there are bunks on both sides, it has another set of windows on the opposite side to match, along with a window at the galley. We looked for quite a while and though we would have preferred to have had maybe a smaller trailer with larger windows, the price tag of $3,000 literally sold us. All of the appliances, a/c, water heater, and lights work. The original Dometic refrigerator looks almost like new. The axles were even in good shape. In this picture, there is probably about 500 lbs of tools and stuff inside and the tops of the wheels are very visible.

From what I can see you have a rare custom trailer with those windows like that. I think you have a great find there ...... and to think it was in my backyard.....you got it at a great price too.

I wish somewhere close to Durango were in my backyard! But, then again that is why we are so attracted to Airstreams and the Wally Byam creed. According to the seller, this trailer was custom ordered by a doctor in Amarillo. We are the third owner. It is really very exciting to own a classic Airstream. During the entire 800 mile trip back we kept looking through the back window to make sure it was really there. We looked at the new Airstreams and after recovering from sticker shock decided to go the vintage route. This seems to be a habit, we have a 1956 Chris Craft cruiser that we have spent many an hour working on and out enjoying.

I will get the digital camera out this weekend and post some pictures of the rest of the rig. After spending a couple of hours this afternoon poking around in and under the trailer, I can see a list of questions materializing. We want to get the Overlander spiffed up as soon as possible because we plan to take it out west this spring, be married and have a honeymoon Airstream style.

This forum is great! Hopefully Ann and I will get to meet some of you in person and see your beautiful trailers.

I dropped some film off at Eckerd's and for 4.00 they put the entire roll on a CD. And I thought I was going to have to borrow the digital camera again. I don't know if the image quality is as good as if it came straight off a digital but it does show up. I guess I'll start our photo album.

You might have the oldest functioning RV a/c unit in the entire state of Texas! I wonder how many kids the original owner had with all those bunks? I guess you have the custom bunkhouse model. I know you told us once but where is Paradise at?

Paradise is 45 miles NW of Fort Worth on Hwy 114. Actually, we live in Cottondale which is five miles south, but Cottondale no longer has a post office so our mailing address is Paradise. Yes, the A/C unit is a Duo-Therm, I hope it holds out. The highest temperature I've recorded at our house was 116 two summers ago.

With all the bunks and the fold down dinette, you could sleep seven. I hope we never hit that mark but it is nice to have the space.

The original Duo-Therm in my 68 Avion is still pumping out cold air! I was amazed after the trailer sat un-used for 5 years that the A/C worked when I turned it on! It was a very pleasent suprise.

Nice looking Airstream. Where was it that you pulled over and camped?

There is a 20 mile gravel road (New Mexico 453) that runs outside of Grenville, NM, and for the entire twenty miles there is nothing but open land and a few abandoned farms. There is a sign (see photo in my album) that designates a crossing of the Santa Fe trail, but you could not tell exactly where the trail was. It was really pretty out there.

I love your classic Suburban and trailer. I also like the dark woodwork in your T22. Hopefully, I too can get a classic ride to pull the Airstream with. I had a 63 Lincoln covertible years ago that would have looked really cool hooked up to the Overlander.

I was so excited to find my 68 trailer to match my 68 Suburban. The best thing was, I got the Avion from the second owner for $1500. All I had to do is buy new tires and repack the bearings. The dark wood in my trailer is all original with out a mark on it. I guess it was an upgrade on the Avions instead the light birch wood.

very nice find olease take pictures of your work and post them.
if you have a wallgreens drug store near you they have a disposible digital camera there for $10.00 then they put it on a cd for you not shure what the cost of doing that is but it is a cheap way to go.
good job on your new find

I too own a 1962 Overlander... a great year in my opinion. I can only sleep four and dog which is all we need. Seven people in a 26 foot trailer... now that would be close quarters, hope you do't have to squeeze that many in at once.

Nice looking trailer Eric. I was in Paul and Anne's trailer when we went to the Rocky Mountain Vintage Airstream rally a few years back. It is a beauty! I believe they have moved on to another trailer of older vintage. Your window in front of the entry door is intruguing and unique. What is on the interior below the window? Does it possibly have the dinette instead of a goucho (couch)?

Yikes, I should have looked at the date of the original post!

My trailer does indeed have a front dinette and bunk beds on both the streetside and curbside. The whole trailer is undergoing an "Extreme Makeover", so I don't really have any good interior shots to pass along at this time. I have removed the interior, modified the frame to accept 50gal holding tanks, replaced both axles with a disc brake setup, replaced the floor, and I'm about ready to re-attach the top after removing the shell. It sure is funny how out of control these projects can become!
