Dinette is upholstered and loaded. The storage space under and behind it is great! Kudos, Zep.

On our last trip, the car was loaded to the gills. This time, we're able to keep stuff where it belongs -- in the trailer.

Astradome is gasketed with a local hardware store press on gasket, 1/2" in thickness.

It might be overkill, but I tie-wrapped the Ladeux operators and put a strip of aluminum tape across the front to stop the wind from lifting the forward edge.

650 miles into a trip south -- with plenty of rain -- it's holding well without a single drop of water infiltration.

Good to hear, John. Dinette is a big improvement over the folding chairs we saw IIRC, although they had a rustic charm.

Have a safe trip. With our trailer in a giant soulless warehouse all-winter, we are tremendously envious...

Congrats on your goal. Beautiful photo, we too did DV in an Airstream (it was a rental) and now we have two of our own. It was April and 92 degrees at DV and we left the park northeast from Scotty's castle to Ely Nevada to 17 degrees. Enjoy your trip.

Mike,

Death Valley is more amazing that we expected. We've really enjoyed hiking through the canyons on both sides of the valley. The layers of rock are at a 45 degree angle -- sometimes more -- exposing an incredible variety of surfaces. There is more vegetation that we thought and MUCH more water.

We're in the Furnace Creek Campground, so we have access to the ranch. It relies on an incredible amount of spring water to run the Golf Course, Date Grove, several restaurants and a warm spring-fed pool. We explore the park in the morning, then relax in the pool in the afternoon. The weather is perfect this time of year.

Lots of bikers here, some foolishly not carrying enough water. We drove the Artist's loop (multi-colored rock everywhere), a long uphill climb, and found a large group of bikers. I now have some new best friends -- we filled up some water bottles with a spare gallon.

Best to your lovely bride and great children. It was great to meet you on the way out.

John

DEATH Valley

Hi John

In New England we just had 40 inches of snow in the last ten days and are expecting 20" inches more in the next two or so days.

So besides the fact that this area is actually named "Death Valley" it sounds pretty amazing. And warm. I would like to hear more about it if you have time. And I just bought a new pair of hiking boots.

What kind of "bikers" were you mentioning? Motorized or the pedal type?

Gary

Gary,

We just left Joshua Tree NP, another highly recommended spot. Way behind on internet, so let me refer you to this blog for a great writeup on Death Valley. Bikers? All types.

Talking

Seems like it is Overlander catch up month. Good to see updates from others who haven't posted in a while.

We moved and have been focusing mostly on housing, but have done a little work. A while back, I posted a stain mix that initially worked on luan plywood to make it match the original furniture. It hasn't aged well and looks too orange. The wood grain wasn't as rich too.

Luckily, the new-to-us house is a 1950's era house and had unpainted luan doors. We replaced our bedroom door with a new one and I cut up the old luan, stripped and oiled it. Seems to match MUCH better.

Like Shelly, we have upgraded our Tow Vehicle. I'm posting from this site on Cape Cod -- check out the new Tundra. Very happy with how it tows.

Here's a pic the fridge, repaneled. Just need to come up with a vintage looking trim. We're debating about milling down some original mahogany from the Caravel or getting an aluminum edging. At this rate, I'll probably post back in 6 months with our decision.

John, good to hear from you. Congrats on the Tundra - it will yank the Overlander along forever.

Thanks Tom, Vernon and Marcus.

Sputnik and Moonraker had a reunion at Shelly's in New Hampshire last week after more than 2 1/2 years.

It was no surprise that Shelly is a great host and has done meticulous work on Moonraker. Her Zolatone finish looks professional. It's interesting to see the contrast in her approach versus ours. She is doing everything right -- in the right order. We pushed hard to get out on the road, and still have a number of things to finish or do better.

Picked up some great new ideas from her as well as a bit more inspiration. Unfortunately, we have to copy her sealing method for the Fantastic vent already. Stuff should't need maintenance until the restoration is finished!

I'm still amazed at the number of details that I have left to wrap up!

At Shelly's, we went through a number of pictures that we've taken over the last couple of years of work. This one got the best laugh and I promised her I'd post it.

Lesson learned: warming up VCT tile makes it easy to cut to size. Warming it up on a hot day in the sun is tough on the grass!
