Life in the Slow Lane - Garden of the Gods

Posted 07-11-2014 at 08:54 PM by silverlabs

Yesterday we made it to Colorado Springs, Colorado with ease. We were pleased to see that the F150 towed the trailer easily in the less than flat terrain encountered so far. I say it this way in case people who really drive in mountains are reading this. This is different driving to us flatlanders in Texas.

On the way we had several Airstream sightings. I didn't get good descriptions of any of them. I'm working on that. So, here is my report, such as it is. On 7/10 There was an AS Motor Home parked at a hotel near the AQHA headquarters in Amarillo about 8:45 a.m. While leaving Amarillo we saw one on Tascosa Road in a circle driveway. It was very shiny!

On 7/10 we saw what I think was no. 4342 at the CO/NM state line at 11:30 a.m. We saw a second one right about 12:15 p.m. just north of the Welcome Center to Colorado. It was an AS trailer being towed by a black truck with a bike in the bed of the truck.

We stopped at the Colorado Welcome Center for a quick lunch and breaks for the dogs. Made it to Colorado Springs right about 3:00. We stayed at the Garden of the Gods RV Park.

As we were escorted to our site we noticed that there were two other AS parked near us. We were so excited!

Turns out my worries about talking to AS folks were unfounded. We got set up and I leashed up the dogs for a quick walk. As I made it about 20 steps a lady jumped out of a truck and asked if she could walk and talk with me! They are new AS owners as well and she was disappointed to learn we were newbies just like they are. They were having AC troubles and hoped we were experienced enough to help them. Turns out their AC had started running again but they had no idea why. We had a lovely conversation and parted ways as it was a pretty hot day to be standing out in the sun chatting for too long.

When I returned to the campsite the hubs was chatting with the husband and the owner of a really large SOB. The group dispersed and we were left to continue our setup. The hubs told the AS hubs that he thinks that the AC froze up and had just thawed out enough to work again. So, my handy hubs was able to be helpful again!

Our dogs have gotten a little more comfortable with campground life. Darci was much more comfortable walking about and Kona was much more comfortable with Darci being comfortable.

It was pretty hot and steamy in Colorado Springs. It was really too hot to do any of the hiking we had planned so we decided to do it this morning. We took a little drive to get ice, which took about an hour, and found the tourist crowd. On the way back we found a really convenient spot to buy ice that would have been about a minute from the campground. There is a lot of traffic in Colorado Springs.

Dinnertime rolled around and we prepared our healthy meal of chili dogs . As we sat down to eat them a nice couple strolled by and asked what year our AS was. Turns out they own the 36Ft slide out parked across from us! We had a delightful conversation with them about their AS. Turns out we have done some things right in our set up. I think we got a thumbs up from him. His wife was lovely to chat with as well.

Turns out the campground employee that drove around in the golf cart was friendly. We were talking about our plans for today and asked him if we should do Pike's Peak or Garden of the Gods since we were limited on time. He told us his vote and then reminded us check out time was too early for either to be feasible.

All in all we enjoyed our time spent here. We had a great time chatting with different folks and learned about a few good campgrounds to try as well.
